The occurrence of gastric ulcers in pigs mainly refers to keratinization, erosion and necrosis or autodigestion of the gastric-esophageal mucosa, forming round ulcer surfaces, and even gastric perforation. Symptoms include anorexia, abdominal discomfort, abnormal intestinal motility leading to constipation or diarrhea, and in some cases gastric bleeding and melena. In the early stage of this disease, there is slight gastric bleeding, manifesting only as indigestion, which is often difficult to detect. After gastric perforation, when accompanied by acute diffuse peritonitis, death can occur rapidly. It often occurs sporadically, causing the death of individual pigs within a herd. This disease can occur at any age, but is more commonly seen in rapidly growing pigs weighing over 50 kg and in sows housed in individual gestation stalls. It occurs in all four seasons, but is most common in the hot summer and autumn seasons. Chronically affected pigs show reduced appetite or no eating; the body surface and visible mucous membranes of the affected pigs are noticeably pale, with occasional blood in vomit or vomitus, arching of the back or lying prone, preferring to lie down due to weakness, and progressive emaciation. Initially there is constipation, which later becomes coal-tar-like feces, with a positive occult blood test. The condition sometimes worsens and sometimes eases, causing digestive disturbances and abdominal pain. A small number of cases have symptoms of chronic peritonitis. The disease course is 7 to 30 days. In acute onset, due to massive hemorrhage at the ulcer site, the affected pig may die suddenly. Some affected pigs also suddenly vomit blood after intense exercise, biting each other, or around farrowing, pass kerosene-like bloody feces, with decreased body temperature, rapid breathing, abdominal pain and restlessness, pale body surface and mucous membranes, and physical weakness, ultimately dying from exhaustion. When an affected pig develops peritonitis due to gastric perforation, death generally occurs within 1 to 2 days after symptoms appear. The treatment principle is to eliminate the causative factors, neutralize gastric acid, and protect the gastric mucosa. For mildly affected pigs, they should be kept quiet to reduce stress responses.
