Important steps in winter management of peas
Peas are an important winter grain and vegetable crop. To grow peas well, the following steps should be taken at present:
1. Manage water and fertilizer well. Do not water before emergence. During the vegetative growth period after emergence, focus on cultivating and weeding, and water appropriately, as long as the soil does not dry and crack. For vining varieties, set up trellises when the vines are 30 cm long. Water lightly before budding, and do not water during the flowering period. Snow peas have nitrogen-fixing ability and do not need much fertilizer, but most varieties have strong growth vigor and are planted densely, so generally 3 topdressings are needed. The first is applied during the vigorous vine-growing period, with 15 kg of compound fertilizer per mu, or 4000 kg of human manure and urine; during the pod-setting period, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, with 15 kg of diammonium phosphate per mu, and 5 kg of potassium sulfate or potassium chloride, with an obvious yield-increasing effect.
2. Thin leaves and pinch tips. When the plant grows to 15 nodes, pinch the tips and remove the old and yellow leaves at the lower part to improve ventilation and light transmission. To prevent flower and pod drop, spray with 30 mg/L of anti-drop agent.
3. Scientific management. About 20 days after emergence of snow peas, it is generally already the cold winter. At this time, the seedlings have very strong cold resistance, but attention should still be paid to preventing freezing, and a cold-resistant agent can be sprayed on the leaves; after the temperature rises in spring, the plastic film can be removed, and timely cultivation and loosening of the soil should be carried out to increase ground temperature, with 7-8 kg of quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer applied as topdressing, and light watering promptly after topdressing, but do not flood irrigate; during the flowering period, spray “920” etc. to protect flowers and pods and increase yield.
4. Prevent and control diseases and pests. Throughout the entire growth period, snow peas are harmed by cabbage caterpillars and mites, which can be controlled with cypermethrin and dicofol. The main diseases are viral disease and rust, mainly controlled with virus or virus K and triadimefon and copper preparations, spraying once every 3-7 days, depending on the severity of the disease.
5. Harvest at the right time. 7-10 days after snow peas flower, the tender pods have formed and can be harvested promptly for market. Harvesting should be 1-2 days earlier, when the pods are clean and attractive, the seeds can be seen but are not bulging and the pods are flat. Pick out pods with pests, diseases, or that are broken, and spray the pods with a 20 mg/kg B solution, which can inhibit chlorophyll degradation, enhance freshness retention, and improve marketability.
