Low-carbon pig farming supports the sustainable development of Jiangxi Wannian's pig industry
Wannian County in Jiangxi Province has vigorously promoted zero-emission and other low-carbon pig farming technologies, effectively resolving the dilemma between pig production and environmental protection and achieving both economic and ecological benefits. This is a concrete manifestation of the county's efforts to develop its pig industry through a "green revolution" and actively integrate into the construction of the Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone.
Wannian is a major pig farming county in Jiangxi, with 26 pig farms each producing more than 10,000 head per year and an annual output of more than 800,000 head of live pigs. In advancing the construction of the Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone, the county has given prominent priority to strengthening pollution control in pig farming. It has not only vigorously promoted the use of biogas technology at pig farms above designated size, but also, taking the opportunity of new rural construction, actively guided and assisted in the construction of biogas digesters, with the county finance allocating 1 million yuan each year to subsidize the cost of biogas digester equipment and building materials and the wages of technicians. At present, through the use of biogas, the pig products of 5 pig farms in the county have obtained national pollution-free agricultural product certificates, and 13 ten-thousand-head pig farms have been awarded the title of provincial-level "pollution-free agricultural product base". All 22 pig farming enterprises above designated size in the county have built biogas digesters. Jixing Pig Farm, one of China's top 100 pig farming enterprises, produces more than 80,000 head of high-quality commercial pigs annually and generates an average of more than 150 tons of manure per day. To reduce pollution, the farm invested nearly 6 million yuan to build a pig farm sewage treatment process system, implementing rainwater-sewage separation, dry-wet separation and sewage treatment. The pig manure is harmlessly treated and returned to the fields for use, developing the cultivation of grain, nursery stock, fruit and vegetables, which has fairly well achieved a cost balance between farming and breeding.
Dried manure becomes green fertilizer. The county adds HM bacterial fermentation substrate to pig manure, then adds auxiliary materials such as rice husks, stirs the mixture evenly, and piles it into fermentation pits, after which the odor is completely eliminated within 3 days. The fermentation period is generally 10 to 15 days. After this fermentation treatment, the pig manure not only loses its odor but can also achieve the purpose of killing pathogens, weed seeds and insect eggs, making it an excellent organic fertilizer. After further processing, it can also be made into special organic fertilizer for nursery stock, melons and fruits, and vegetables. This not only solves the environmental pollution brought by pig farming and achieves sustainable development of the pig industry, but also increases the economic benefits of enterprises and promotes the construction of ecological agriculture. To date, 23 pig farms each producing more than 10,000 head in the county have invested a total of 70 million yuan to build pig manure fermentation pits, and the county has basically achieved "zero emission" of pig farming manure. More than 80 households in Tangbei Village, Qibu Township, use harmlessly treated pig farm manure to grow pollution-free vegetables, paulownia, oil tea and Lei bamboo, increasing their annual income by more than 1,000 yuan per household.
