Details to note when farming locusts

1. Points to note when hatching seed eggs:

To hatch locust seed eggs, build a small pond with a few bricks. It is best to sprinkle some water at the bottom first, then spread soil flat, then evenly scatter the seed eggs on top, and cover them with 2--3 cm of moistened sawdust. When the small locusts come out, they can easily bore out of the sawdust. During this period, the temperature must reach above 25°C before the locusts begin hatching quickly. The sawdust on top should be sprayed with water once every 2--3 days. If it is too dry, the seed eggs will be ruined by drying out. During spraying, it is best not to spray very cold water from inside the house. If possible, water warmed in the sun for a few hours is best. Try to spray the warm water on top in the afternoon, because too cold water will slow down their hatching.

2. Problems to note in the management of small locusts:

The newly emerged small locusts are only as big as flies, very, very small. If heavy rain happens to come at this time, part of them should be covered with plastic sheeting to prevent them from being killed by the heavy rain. Generally, heavy rain is rarely encountered during those few days. After 7 days, even if they get a little rain, it does not matter. The newly emerged small locusts eat very little, so it is best if you can give them some tender green grass. The small locusts raised that way are healthier and bigger. Locusts molt once every 7 days, and each molt is one instar. After reaching the 3rd instar, they can be fed some older grass, and they can also be fed some dried grass powder mixed with water and sprinkled inside the shed.

  3. Problems to note in locust rearing:

Generally everyone knows that locusts eat grass, and they can also be fed grass powder, but when should they be fed so that it is both good and they do not go hungry? If locusts are too hungry, large locusts will eat small locusts. In fact, they do not bite each other 24 hours a day. At night, in the morning, and after dusk, they will not bite. The main time is around noon. If at this time you leave them both hungry and thirsty, then they will eat the small ones. So during these few hours, it is best to feed green grass once and everything is solved. Many farmers fail to grasp this key point, so many locusts go hungry at noon and eat each other.

 4. How to deal with ants and mole crickets in the shed

Some livestock farming sheds will have ants, mole crickets, and some other insects. The harm to locusts is not great, but it is best not to have them. However, some people think that using a little pesticide will solve everything when clearing them out. In fact, this method cannot be used, because afterward there will be residues that are harmful and not beneficial to the growth of locusts. To eliminate ants, you can break open the nest and scald them to death with boiling water. For mole crickets, you can use a light bulb for illumination and place a large basin of water underneath. At night, the mole crickets will rush toward the light, and you can kill them.
