Common problems with deep-litter pig farming technology

1. After the pigs are sent to market, if the bedding is to be used as organic fertilizer, does it still need fermentation treatment?
After the pigs are sent to market, if the bedding is to be used as organic fertilizer, especially to be sold as commercial organic fertilizer, it must undergo further fermentation treatment, because although the bedding has completed initial fermentation in the deep-litter bed, it has not thoroughly completed the harmless treatment and stabilization process. In particular, indicators such as organic matter, total nutrients, moisture, pH value and degree of decomposition still cannot fully meet the relevant product regulations, so further fermentation treatment is needed in accordance with the relevant regulations for organic fertilizer.
2. How long can a deep-litter bed be used?
The service life of a deep-litter bed refers to the service life of the bedding. If the bedding is of good quality and resistant to decay, it will last longer. Generally speaking, sawdust lasts a long time and can be used for more than 3 years. If straw is used, it lasts a shorter time and rots in about one year. After the deep-litter bed is made, the bacterial liquid mixed in for the first time will, over time, die on the surface and lose activity, so it needs to be replenished. When replenishing, 1 kg of bacterial liquid can be diluted with 50-100 times its amount of water. Turn the bedding to a depth of 20 cm and spray to replenish.
3. So how long can the bacteria you put in last?
Replenishing the bacterial liquid depends on the fermentation effect of the deep-litter bed. Some deep-litter beds are in a good natural fermentation state. They process manure very quickly and there is no odor in the pig house, so no replenishment is needed. Some deep-litter beds were not made well the first time and cannot decompose manure well, and there is odor in the pig house, which proves that the fermentation of the deep-litter bed is poor, so the bacterial liquid should be replenished appropriately. In addition, a high breeding density produces more manure, so the replenishment interval should also be shortened. Generally speaking, carrying out an overall spray of the pig house once a week and using the bacterial liquid for disinfection is relatively scientific.
4. My family has a pig shed that was built before. Can it be converted into a deep-litter bed without sunlight?
A deep-litter bed does not depend on sunlight! However, sunlight is better, as it is good for living things! Livestock farming involves air, water and sunlight. Sunlight can disinfect, increase the cholesterol of pigs, and promote the health of pigs.
5. Is the investment cost of the lazy man's pig farming method high?
The investment cost of lazy man's pig farming is mainly the investment in the deep-litter bed; everything else follows the original model. The deep-litter bed requires bedding and bacteria. The bacterial strain provided by our company is calculated at about 20 yuan per sq m. The rest is bedding such as sawdust and rice husks. Depending on the location, the bedding cost also differs. Overall, the cost is about 50 yuan per sq m.
6. What disadvantages does the deep-litter bed have?
Answer: It has no disadvantages whatsoever. Pig farming in deep-litter-bed pig pens uses microorganisms as the "hub" for the circulation and conversion of matter and energy. It uses high-tech means to collect specific beneficial microorganisms, and through processes such as screening, culturing, testing, purification, rejuvenation and propagation, forms functional microbial strains with strong vitality, which are then mixed and fermented in a certain proportion with sawdust or wood shavings, auxiliary materials, activators, salt, etc. to make an organic composite bedding, automatically satisfying the physiological needs of pigs in the shed for warmth, ventilation and trace elements. This is an environmentally friendly ecological pig farming model. In a deep-litter-bed pig house, pigs live on this organic bedding from birth, and their excrement is rapidly degraded, digested or transformed by microorganisms; the nutrients provided by the pig manure cause the beneficial functional bacteria to reproduce continuously, forming high-protein mycelium, which, after being eaten by the pigs, not only aids digestion and improves immunity, but also increases the feed conversion rate and lowers the input-output ratio and feed-to-meat ratio. For finisher pigs sent to market at the same body weight, 20-30% of feed can be saved, and more than 60-80% of manual labor can be saved.
7. If one pen is 30-40 sq m, how many pigs can be raised in that pen?
Answer: Each pig occupies about 1.5-2 sq m, so 30-40 sq m can raise about 25-30 pigs.
8. After a batch of pigs is sent to market, does the bedding need to be fermented again?
Answer: If the damage to the deep-litter bed is not too serious, then no.
Must bedding for pig farming undergo fermentation?
Answer: Under normal circumstances, bedding must undergo fermentation treatment before it can be used as a deep-litter bed. In particular, bedding for nursery pens must always first undergo fermentation treatment. However, when the following two conditions are met at the same time, the bedding may skip fermentation treatment and be directly used as a deep-litter bed after inoculation.
(1) The bedding raw materials are fresh, with suitable moisture (below 40%), and free of rot and mold;
(2) Used as bedding for deep-litter beds for replacement gilts, or as bedding for growing pigs before the onset of winter.
9. How is the temperature of the deep-litter bed controlled?
Answer: The fermentation rhythm and temperature of the pig pen can be controlled artificially. To heat up and ferment particularly quickly, one or several of the following comprehensive measures can be taken: increase the amount of probiotic liquid, pre-activate the fermentation bacterial agent with brown sugar water, add more nutrients such as fresh rice bran or urea water, increase the thickness of the sawdust layer, increase the number of turnings and punch holes for ventilation, appropriately raise the moisture content of the sawdust mixture (but be sure not to let the moisture exceed 70%, otherwise odor will be produced due to fermentation and decomposition by spoilage bacteria, which runs counter to the purpose of deodorization), and so on. To lower the temperature, the opposite measures can be used. The internal temperature generally should not exceed 50°C, the core fermentation layer should not exceed 60°C, and the surface temperature should be below 25-30°C.
