Methods for Regulating Temperature and Humidity in Scorpion Farming
1. FarmingScorpionsTemperature Regulation
When the spring temperature reaches 10°C or above, scorpions begin to stir and become active, and then, as the temperature continues to rise, they gradually become more active. When the temperature is around 28°C, scorpions are relatively active, and this is the normal period for their growth and development. When the temperature is between 28—35°C, scorpions are most active; both large and small scorpions are highly active and have a strong appetite. At this time, male and female adult scorpions have strong sexual desire, and this is the peak period for mating; young scorpions molt smoothly and grow rapidly. When the temperature is above 35°C, the scorpions' feeding and activity decrease. When the temperature exceeds 39°C, scorpions move to cool, shaded places, and their feeding and activity decrease markedly; high temperatures cause loss of body fluids in scorpions, seriously affecting their growth and development, and sometimes causing them to escape or die. Therefore, if the temperature of the scorpion nest is higher than 39°C, ventilation, shading, water spraying or other related measures must be taken immediately to lower the temperature. If the temperature is below 20°C, scorpion activity weakens and growth slows;
In late autumn or winter, when the temperature drops below 10°C, scorpions stop their activity and begin winter dormancy; at 4—6°C, the scorpion's appendages and post-abdomen curl up and its responses become sluggish; at this time, if the scorpion's ventral side is facing upward, it often cannot right itself. When the temperature is below 0°C, the scorpion's whole body relaxes and it loses consciousness; if the temperature drops below minus 5°C, the scorpion will freeze stiff and die. Therefore, in winter, heat preservation and freeze prevention measures must be carried out carefully. Generally, outdoor scorpion nests and scorpion pools should be tightly covered at the opening with plastic film, and the surroundings should be wrapped and covered with straw curtains or corn stalks; indoor scorpion nests and scorpion pools should have windows closed properly, and plastic sheeting should be used to block windows and door gaps; those kept in jars, vats, basins, etc. should be buried in soil or moved into a greenhouse, so as to avoid and reduce scorpion deaths during hibernation as much as possible.
2、FarmingScorpionsHumidity Regulation
Scorpions are also very sensitive to humidity. When the air humidity in the scorpion nest and the water content of the nest soil are low, scorpions often burrow deeper; conversely, when the humidity in the scorpion nest is too high and the water content of the nest soil is too high, scorpions desperately crawl outward and will escape in large numbers. For relatively ideal scorpion farming humidity, the relative air humidity should be maintained at 5rl%-75%, and the water content of the nest soil should be between 15%--20%. Generally, the air should be such that people do not feel stuffy, and the nest soil should be neither dry nor wet. Therefore, during continuous rainy weather, attention should be paid to ventilation and dehumidification; during high-temperature drought, attention should be paid to spraying water to replenish moisture. The climate in southern China is relatively humid, and the groundwater level is relatively high, so special attention should be paid to keeping the scorpion nest dry; while the climate in the north is relatively dry, and the groundwater level is relatively low, so special attention should be paid to keeping the scorpion nest moist.
