Summer management of fermentation beds

How to cool pig houses in summer:

First, on the basis of natural ventilation, increase mechanical ventilation; where there is a wet curtain, turn on the water curtain wall to cool down; second, cool down by sprinkling water or spraying; also, cool down by filling the walkways with water. Third, by lowering the thickness of the bedding and making bedding mounds(concentrate the bedding in a certain area)and other methods to inhibit bedding fermentation and achieve the purpose of cooling; fourth, reduce stocking density.

How to maintain fermentation beds in summer:

Bedding maintenance in summer differs from other seasons. The key maintenance points are as follows: lower the bedding thickness. In summer, the depth of the bedding can be appropriately lowered, but it needs to be kept at50cm or more; generally60cm-deep bedding is more suitable, which can ensure fermentation while also avoiding too much heat produced by fermentation.

Create a regional fermentation environment in the bedding. Fermentation bedding itself has a pattern of temperature distribution by region; generally the temperature around the edges is low, while the temperature in the middle and in the area where manure and urine are concentrated is high. In normal seasons, especially winter, spread the manure as evenly as possible across all areas so that it ferments evenly. Bedding management in summer is different; a regional fermentation environment should be deliberately created. In summer, reduce or stop turning and raking, and there is no need to spread the manure evenly; a manure and urine excretion area will naturally form in the pig house. Because summer temperatures are relatively high, fermentation efficiency is also quite high. If manure accumulates, it can be piled toward the back, and other areas, because fermentation efficiency is inhibited, will have a cool bedding surface.

Make bedding mounds. You can also artificially pile the bedding into mound shapes to form thinner bedding areas in some places, providing areas for pigs to lie down. When too much manure accumulates, the manure and urine accumulation area can be turned into a raised and thickened bedding area, forming a new thinner bedding area.

Fourteen   Winter maintenance and management of fermentation beds

Compared with summer, the management of pig houses in winter is simpler and less troublesome, but pay attention to the following points: first, strictly follow the principle of ventilation and air exchange; even if the temperature drops, open doors and windows to expel polluted air and water vapor; second, set up windbreak walls, especially in cold areas, to prevent“drafts“from entering the pig house, so as not to cause pigs to catch colds; third, pay attention to moisture prevention, as a damp and cold environment will seriously affect the growth and development of pigs. At the same time, in order to increase the temperature of the pig house and improve fermentation efficiency, the stocking density of pigs can be appropriately increased.
