Mushroom spawn is the foundation and guarantee for achieving a bountiful harvest of edible mushrooms. The quality of the spawn directly affects the economic benefits of edible mushroom production. When purchasing good edible mushroom spawn, pay attention to the following aspects.

1. Choose varieties based on the market. Edible mushroom prices vary across different regions, seasons, and years. Mushroom growers should not stick to old rules when selecting varieties but should adapt to circumstances, starting from the following aspects.

1. Choose varieties that command good prices, such as "2796" among button mushrooms, oyster mushroom p54 "New Century," small oyster mushrooms, and straw mushroom v23, v35, and other varieties. These are usually in short supply and fetch good prices, winning through price, and are especially suitable for development in suburban areas.

2. Choose high-yield, high-quality varieties to win through quality and yield. These varieties can still achieve relatively high economic benefits even during peak market periods, and are more suitable for development at large-scale edible mushroom bases that ship produce elsewhere.

3. Choose new and superior varieties. "Things are precious when they are rare." Some rare new and superior varieties such as king oyster mushroom, tea tree mushroom, white beech mushroom, shimeji mushroom, and Xiangwei mushroom can be produced on a large scale, command high prices, and yield good economic benefits. However, when choosing them, you must master their characteristics and the accompanying cultivation techniques.

2. Apply the "three looks" when choosing varieties. Currently, there are still many fake and inferior spawns on the market, making it hard for consumers to tell the genuine from the fake and easy to be deceived. Therefore, to choose superior spawn, you must do the "three looks" well:

1. Look at the supplier. Choose to buy spawn from units with high credibility, strong economic strength, and solid technical expertise. Do not simply pursue low prices, otherwise you may easily be cheated, lose more than you gain, and suffer unnecessary economic losses.

2. Look at the brand. Choose brands you are familiar with, and do not blindly trust advertisements, such as claims of a conversion rate of 450%, 500%, resistance to all contaminating bacteria, or a 100% success rate. These are all deliberately exaggerated claims and should not be readily believed.

3. Look at the spawn. Spawn has certain external characteristics, and many spawns can be judged by appearance for their quality and degree of freshness. Buyers should learn to observe the characteristics of spawn and be good at distinguishing whether spawn is good or bad and new or old.

3. Be willing to spend money on good spawn. Edible mushroom cultivation is a type of planting business with huge differences in economic benefits. For example, with 5 tons of cultivation substrate, the output value can reach tens of thousands of yuan at the high end, while at the low end it is only a few hundred to a thousand yuan, and some may even lose money. If you are willing to invest and buy premium spawn, it can actually, to a certain extent, ensure high yield and high quality, reduce investment risk, and mean spending a little to gain a lot.
