Because of its striking colors, the gloxinia is usually kept on an office desk or at home. Many flower lovers are delighted when their gloxinia blooms, but after it flowers, some growers do not know how to handle it. At this point the gloxinia needs to be cut back, to keep the plant from shooting straight upward, since if it gets too tall or too heavy it will lean to one side and lose its beauty. After cutting back, the plant will grow again and become a vigorous potted plant.

How to cut back a gloxinia

1. The part of the gloxinia you cut must have sprouted buds; if there are no buds, do not cut it. Leave just one bud on each plant, and in this way the flowers will grow out.

2. Prepare containers according to the number of cut-back plants, fill the containers with clean perlite, then poke a hole in the perlite and carefully insert the plant into it, then press it firm with the perlite.

How to water a gloxinia

1. When watering a gloxinia, never let the water touch the leaves, because once the leaves get wet, the gloxinia's leaves will rot. Water only enough that the perlite does not float up.

2. If the gloxinia's leaves wilt, you can still water it. If the gloxinia's leaves grow a root ball and it blooms in July, after the last flowering period ends you can keep and store the root ball in August, cutting off the leaves and stems and leaving 3-4 cm. The tuber can be placed in sand promptly for storage, at a temperature above 5°C, keeping the sand fresh and cool, neither wet nor dry.

When warm spring arrives, the gloxinia will sprout. You can keep 2-3 sprouts and move them to a pot to continue caring for them. Water and fertilize well and maintain a suitable temperature, and the flowers will bloom even more beautifully!
