Corn borers severely affect yield, and timely control is key

It has now been more than twenty days since the wheat harvest, and corn has already been planted in most areas. In Northeast China, corn has now also entered the jointing stage. Corn management is very important, as it affects corn yield. Corn borers are a major pest harming corn yield. Here we will talk about the problem of corn borers.
What kind of pest is the corn borer?
Growers who plant corn all know that the corn borer is a common insect pest in corn, severely affecting corn growth and even causing large-scale yield reductions. The corn borer is also called the corn stem borer, and it is the larva of a moth. The corn borer mainly damages the corn stalks, chewing the tender leaves and stalks, mostly gathering in the leaf whorl, and later it also chews the corn kernels. This causes weak corn growth, stalks that break easily, and reduced lodging resistance. In severe cases, it causes corn yield reductions.
Control of corn borers
If you want to control corn borers, it is best to first understand their growth habits. Only then can you know your enemy and yourself and fight a hundred battles without danger. One growth characteristic of the corn borer is that it can overwinter in corn stalks. If the stalks are not cleaned up thoroughly, it is easy to cause an outbreak of borers the following year. The corn stem borer reproduces very quickly, laying about seven batches of eggs a year, with several hundred eggs each time. The damage is enormous. If the weather humidity is above 60% and the temperature is around 25 degrees, it is very easy to cause an outbreak of corn borers.
Control of corn borers
Keep field stalks cleaned up thoroughly. Whether it is cotton stalks, corn stalks, sorghum, or the stalks of other crops, they must all be cleaned up thoroughly to prevent corn borer eggs from overwintering.
When planting corn, choose corn varieties with relatively strong pest resistance.
The corn stem borer is mostly active at night and is phototactic, so some insect-killing lamps can be set up.
Apply pesticides during the corn large trumpet stage. This period is the best time to kill corn borers. Generally, 3% isofenphos-methyl microgranules are broadcast, and the amount used is generally no more than two jin per mu. In addition, concentrated control can be carried out during the corn filling stage, when corn borers harm the corn kernels. Growers can use a 50% methamidophos emulsifiable concentrate solution diluted 800-1000 times to wipe the top tassel and silks of the corn. However, this method is somewhat troublesome to carry out.
During the corn large trumpet stage, you can also spray abamectin, chlorantraniliprole, and lambda-cyhalothrin. Just use them according to the instructions.
