Do Snakes Eat Toads? A Comprehensive Analysis of Snake Predatory Habits

Toads usually hunt and are active at night, feeding on beetles, moths, snails, fly maggots and the like. Toads are poisonous and are considered one of the Five Poisons. Everyone presumably knows that snakes eat frogs, but did you know that snakes eat toads? Let's take a look together below!
Do Snakes Eat Toads?
Snakes do eat toads. Snakes are natural enemies of animals such as frogs and toads. Snakes are physiologically resistant to the toxins in toad skin, and they also have blade-like teeth on their upper jawbone. Their swallowing structure is similar to that of other snakes, but toads puff up their bodies in defense. The snake opens its rear teeth wide to pierce through the toad's body and puncture its lungs, and the deflated toad is like a punctured tire.
However, experiments and behavioral observations show that the teeth are too short to deflate the toad; they transmit venom into the toad's body through the bite and easily swallow the toad, which relaxes after being poisoned.
What Are the Natural Enemies of Toads?
During the tadpole stage, the enemies are mainly carnivorous fish, turtles, shrimp, rice field eels, water snakes, water centipedes, leeches, aquatic plankton and the like. In addition, large tadpoles eat small tadpoles, and young toads and adult toads eat small tadpoles. The enemies of adult toads include carnivorous fish, snakes, turtles and soft-shelled turtles, rodents, otters, leeches and some birds. Toads themselves may also engage in cannibalism.
Unbelievable: A Toad Swallows a Small Snake
At 4 p.m. on June 3, 2009, while traveling at Qingcheng Mountain, Chongqing resident Ran Longzhong accidentally photographed the rare scene of a toad swallowing a snake. The whole process took only about five minutes. At the time, Mr. Ran was strolling around Qingcheng Mountain. When he walked to a thicket, he suddenly saw a fist-sized toad with orange-red and black markings swallowing a small snake with the same markings. The small snake had already had the rear half of its body swallowed by the toad, but it was still writhing and struggling nonstop. Five minutes later, the small snake was completely swallowed into the toad's belly. According to local people, the small snake was the commonly seen rotten grass snake, but a toad swallowing a snake is truly rare.
