Prevention and control measures for yellow and white scours in piglets

Yellow and white scours in piglets are both acute infectious diseases of newborn piglets caused by pathogenic Escherichia coli. If not treated promptly, they can easily lead to piglet death and bring huge economic losses to pig farms and breeders. Today, the editor will share with you the symptoms and prevention and control methods of yellow and white scours in piglets.

Symptoms of yellow and white scours in piglets

1. Yellow scour in piglets: watery thin feces, yellow or grayish yellow, containing small curd flakes and small bubbles. Sick pigs are thirsty, eat less milk, and show dehydration, emaciation, coma, and exhaustion.

2. White scour in piglets: piglets suddenly develop diarrhea, with cases occurring one after another in the same litter, passing milky white, grayish white, or pale yellowish white, foul-smelling, paste-like or serous feces. Piglets are listless, afraid of cold, dehydrated, reduce suckling or stop suckling, and sometimes vomiting of milk is seen. Generally, the condition of sick pigs is relatively mild, and timely treatment can lead to recovery, but repeated episodes often result in runt pigs. In severe cases, affected pigs develop fecal incontinence and die in about 1 week.

Prevention methods for yellow scour in piglets

1. Do a good job in managing sows before and after farrowing, and strengthen the care of newborn piglets.

2. Traditional Chinese medicine prevention (Sihuang Zhili granules). After piglets are born, administer it to the sow to purify the milk, which can effectively prevent piglet diarrhea; for diarrhea in suckling piglets, likewise administer it to the sow, which can effectively treat piglet diarrhea.

3. Western medicine prevention: orally administer sensitive antibiotics within 12 hours after birth.

① Compound sulfamethoxypyrazine injection, 5×l0ml. After birth, before the first suckling of colostrum, administer 0.5m1 by oral drip, then twice daily for 3 consecutive days. If pigs develop the disease, continue administering the drug, doubling the dose.

② Gentamicin sulfate injection, each vial 10X2m1, 80,000 IU. After birth, before the first suckling of colostrum, orally administer 10,000 IU, then twice daily for 3 consecutive days. If pigs develop the disease, continue administering the drug.

4. Microbial preparation prevention, such as Cujunsheng, Tiaojunsheng, Rukangsheng, Kangdabao, etc., which inhibit Escherichia coli by regulating the balance of the intestinal microbial flora of piglets.

5. Use vaccines for immunization. The method is to vaccinate pregnant sows 30 days and 15 days before farrowing, choosing genetically engineered Escherichia coli vaccines. Trivalent inactivated vaccine against Escherichia coli K88, K99, and 987P, or bivalent genetically engineered inactivated vaccine against Escherichia coli K88 and K99, so that piglets obtain protection through breast milk.

Prevention methods for white scour in piglets

Comprehensive measures should be taken, including antibacterial treatment, antidiarrheal treatment, using traditional Chinese medicine to eliminate the internal cause of damp-heat, improving immunity, and restoring the intestinal internal environment to normal.

1. Antidiarrheal: Sihuang Zhili granules, preventive dose 100g mixed with 300 jin of feed, double the dose for treatment, use for 5-7 days.

2. Antibacterial: apramycin, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, amoxicillin, Xieting. For example: mequindox orally at 10~15mg per kg body weight each time, twice daily, for 2~3 consecutive days. Gentamicin sulfate orally at 5~10mg/kg body weight each time, twice daily, for 2~3 consecutive days.

3. Antidiarrheal: tannalbin. To aid digestion and absorption: yeast tablets, baking soda, pepsin, etc.

4. Fluid replacement: oral glucose saline and multivitamins. Formula of glucose saline: add 20 grams of glucose, 3.5 grams of sodium chloride, 1.5 grams of potassium chloride, and 2.5 grams of sodium bicarbonate to 1000ml of water.

5. Prevention: vaccine prevention is poorly effective. A relatively effective method for preventing yellow and white scours in piglets is to orally administer enrofloxacin/oxytetracycline 0.5ml on the first day after birth. For the first three days, after piglets finish suckling, drive them into an insulated box (the farrowing house must be equipped with an insulated box, and methods such as hanging heat lamps should be used to bring the temperature inside the box to about 35 degrees). At 7 days of age, orally administer enrofloxacin 1ml again or inject oxytetracycline 1-2ml intramuscularly. In fact, keeping warm is the most important.
