What should clownfish be kept with?

Clownfish are tropical saltwater fish of the damselfish family. Although they are called clownfish, they are not ugly at all and are extremely popular. Many people like to keep clownfish at home as ornamental fish or feng shui fish. For mixed keeping, you can choose to keep clownfish of the same species together, but when keeping the same species of clownfish together, you need to pay attention to the size of the individuals; there must not be too great a difference. Now let us take a look at what clownfish should be kept with!

What should clownfish be kept with?

For mixed keeping, clownfish can be paired with other types of saltwater fish, such as surgeonfish like the powder blue tang, blue tang, and yellow tang, gobies like the golden-spotted goby and the large goby, and other small damselfish such as the three-striped damselfish, blue devil, and black-and-white or colorful Siamese fighting fish. When clownfish are kept together with the above saltwater fish, note that for relatively aggressive saltwater fish such as the blue devil and four-striped damselfish, their body size should preferably be smaller than that of the clownfish so they can be kept harmoniously. However, it is not recommended to keep clownfish with saltwater fish that have larger teeth and rounder bodies, such as papaya fish, dogface puffer, and clown triggerfish, as well as pufferfish.

How should clownfish be kept together?

When keeping clownfish together, the tank should be as large as possible, and it is recommended to have sea anemones. The number of clownfish should correspond to the number of sea anemones; you can keep bubble tip anemones, carpet anemones, magnificent sea anemones, and so on. In addition, when introducing clownfish for mixed keeping into the tank, try to shorten the introduction time as much as possible, preferably letting several fish enter the tank at the same time, and it is recommended to introduce the smaller individuals first, then the slightly larger saltwater fish. When keeping other types of saltwater fish together, be sure to pay attention to their body size. In addition, many types of clownfish are somewhat difficult to keep together, and there may be many cases of fish being beaten to death or injured.

What is the best way to keep clownfish?

1. Keeping environment: To keep clownfish, you first need to create a comfortable and cozy environment for it. Find a few live rocks and build a small cave with a natural barrier for it, keeping appropriate water flow inside the cave. It is best to place an oval pebble inside the cave, with the pebble placed against the outside of the cave opening. Since clownfish live symbiotically with sea anemones, it is best to find a relatively large sea anemone and place it at the cave opening to protect the clownfish.

2. Quarantine before entering the tank: When keeping multiple clownfish, try to introduce them into the tank at the same time. When you buy clownfish and bring them home, quarantine them first, and once you confirm there are no problems, they can enter the tank. Note that the suitable water temperature for clownfish survival is 26-27°C, seawater specific gravity 1.022-1.023, seawater pH between 8.0-8.5, and water hardness 7-9 degrees. Try to adjust the water quality and water temperature within this range.

3. Acclimation and feeding: After clownfish arrive in a new environment, they may need 2-3 days of acclimation. During these days, there is no need to feed them. After the acclimation period, get the clownfish to start eating, first feeding it brine shrimp, then gradually switching to flake food. Once it has completely settled down, pellet food, crushed shrimp meat, or other omnivorous bait are all acceptable.

4. Light control: If clownfish are kept in a bare tank, the water flow must be reduced at night to avoid disturbing the clownfish's rest and thereby affecting its development. Also, before it grows into an adult fish, be sure to give it sufficient light, as fish grow relatively fast at this time, and insufficient light can easily affect development.
