How long can plecos generally live?

The pleco belongs to the catfish family and is also known as the suckermouth catfish, algae eater, or bristlenose catfish. It originated in the rivers of South America and has very strong adaptability, able to survive almost anywhere there is water. It often attaches itself to aquarium walls or aquatic plants and licks off algae, making it the best cleaner in an aquarium. Let's take a look below at how long a pleco can live!
How long can a pleco live?
The lifespan of a pleco varies; it is not guaranteed to live a set number of years. It can be as short as 1 to 2 years, or as long as 6 years, or even longer or shorter, but it never survives without an aquatic environment. Many recorded causes of pleco death include starvation, especially as adult plecos have a greatly increased appetite, but death from cold also occurs. The environment is the most fatal factor for plecos.
How big can a pleco grow?
Under suitable conditions, a pleco can reach a body length of 250 mm, and after reaching adulthood it has a huge appetite. Besides eating algae such as green algae, it also often feeds on the eggs of other fish, able to eat 3000 to 5000 eggs a day, and can also devour large numbers of fry. At the same time, because it is an introduced species, it currently has no natural enemies in the country. It can easily reproduce in large numbers in rivers, threatening the survival of native fish and damaging the ecological chain.
What food does a pleco eat?
The pleco is an omnivorous fish that feeds on algae, benthic animals and debris in the water, and can also devour large numbers of fish eggs and fry. In an aquarium it often attaches to stones and glass to stabilize itself and feed on algae, and also seeks out benthic animals (such as tubifex worms). For small pellet food floating on the water surface, it will suck it up by turning its belly against the water surface, its mouth working like a vacuum cleaner, drawing fish feces and green plants all into its belly. It also holds a bubble in its mouth, and this bubble contains oxygen, allowing it to stay underwater for a long time.
