Snake plant, also known as tiger ear orchid and thousand-year orchid, has clustered leaves that are thick and firm, standing straight like swords, with a short pointed tip at the end and black banded markings alternating light green and dark on both sides; it is evergreen all year round and is a green plant very suitable for growing at home. When caring for a snake plant, make good use of 2 "techniques" and the flower stalks can reach 80 cm tall, growing taller than a tree.

Snake plants like a warm and bright environment and are drought-tolerant; they like sunlight but also tolerate partial shade. They are very suitable for growing in well-drained sandy loam. In winter, they can overwinter safely as long as the temperature stays above 0°C. In summer, avoid direct strong sunlight. So, what are the 2 "techniques" for caring for snake plants?

1. Fertilizing technique

Snake plants do not have very high fertilizer requirements. However, if you want them to grow well and become as tall as a tree, apply a 500-fold general-purpose organic liquid plant fertilizer once every 15-20 days during the growing season. In the hot summer and during the dormant period (in East China, from November to March of the following year), stop fertilizing to avoid fertilizer damage.

During the growing season of the snake plant, if flower lovers can use 0.2% monopotassium phosphate, alternating with organic liquid fertilizer, to water the snake plant, not only will the leaves grow straight and upright, but they will also be lush green, and it will easily produce many small snake plant pups.

2. Watering technique

The potting soil for a potted snake plant can be prepared by mixing 1 part garden soil, 5 parts leaf mold, 1 part dry cow dung, and a small amount of river sand. At the seedling stage, watering should not be excessive, otherwise it is easy to cause root and stem rot.

For flower lovers in East China, the dormant period for planted snake plants is generally from late November to mid-to-late March of the following year. During this period, watering should be even more restrained, keeping the potting soil slightly dry; watering about once a week is enough. During the growing season from April to October, water thoroughly; in summer, water thoroughly once every morning; during the plum rain season, because the air humidity is high, appropriately reduce the amount of watering.

In addition, when caring for snake plants in summer, provide appropriate shade; the snake plant can be placed in a ventilated spot indoors. When the weather is dry, mist the leaves 1-2 times a day; this can keep the leaves fresh and emerald green with good growth.
