What to Do When Amaryllis Leaves Turn Yellow?

Amaryllis is an ornamental flowering plant with excellent visual appeal, bearing large, brightly colored flowers, a graceful plant shape, and emerald-green leaves. It makes a wonderful accent plant for home decor, but it requires careful care. If not properly maintained, amaryllis can develop yellowing leaves and other problems, which detracts from its ornamental and beautifying effect. Let's take a look below at what to do when amaryllis leaves turn yellow!

Natural Metabolism

[Cause] If amaryllis is properly cared for and still develops yellowing leaves, it is usually just the normal metabolism of the plant, and old leaves will gradually turn yellow and drop off.

[Solution] Normal metabolism in amaryllis does not require changing your care routine; simply trim off the old yellowed leaves.

Variety Differences

[Cause] There are many varieties of amaryllis, no fewer than tulips. Generally, amaryllis leaves stay green and emerald year-round, but the leaves of golden-edged amaryllis are green with yellow variegated stripes. If the leaves grow smoothly and normally, then it is not caused by any disease but is simply a difference between varieties.

[Solution] Yellowing leaves caused by variety differences only require normal cultivation.

Overwatering

[Cause] Amaryllis likes moisture but dislikes waterlogging. Whether grown in pots or in the open ground, overwatering will cause leaves to turn yellow.

[Solution] Do not water amaryllis frequently; keeping the potting soil slightly dry is better. However, during the growing period, it still needs an adequate water supply. Also, use soil with good drainage for planting to avoid water accumulating in the potting soil.

Excessive Light

[Cause] Amaryllis likes light, but the light should not be too intense. For example, exposure to the scorching sun in hot summer can cause leaf tips to scorch and leaves to turn yellow.

[Solution] In midsummer, amaryllis should be placed in a spot with less intense sunlight for care, or appropriate shading measures should be taken.

Improper Fertilization

[Cause] Applying fertilizer that is too concentrated or applying organic fertilizer that has not been fully decomposed to amaryllis, especially when fertilizing under high summer temperatures, can cause fertilizer burn and make the leaves turn yellow.

[Solution] Do not apply fertilizer that has not been fermented and decomposed to amaryllis, and do not apply pure phosphorus fertilizer.

Disease Infection

[Cause] When amaryllis is affected by leaf spot disease and leaf blight, the leaves will also turn yellow.

[Solution] In the early stage of the disease, spray with a 1000-fold dilution of 50% Tuzet, or a 1500-fold dilution of 70% Topsin, or an 800-fold dilution of 65% Zineb, etc., spraying once a week for several weeks.

Pest Damage

[Cause] The main pest of amaryllis is the red spider mite. When red spider mites appear, the leaves of amaryllis will also be damaged and turn yellow.

[Solution] When there are few red spider mites, they can be removed by hand. When the infestation is more serious, spray with a 1000-fold dilution of 40% dicofol emulsifiable concentrate to kill them.
