After growing flowers for a long time, you will inevitably run into the problem of compacted potting soil. For small potted plants, never mind, repotting with fresh soil is relatively convenient. But what about large potted plants? Repotting with fresh soil is really laborious. Is there any method that lets us be lazy, skip repotting, and still keep the soil loose, airy and nutritious? Here are a few little tips to share, for reference.

How to deal with compacted potting soil:

1. Find a few thick straws and insert them into the compacted potting soil. It is best to use a tool to poke holes first, so the straws do not get stuck, then pour coarse sand into the straws, and then pull the straws out, so the coarse sand stays in the soil. Each time you water, the coarse sand will spread through the potting soil along with the water, making the potting soil looser and more breathable.

2. First loosen the surface of the potting soil a little, and after controlling the water, thinly sprinkle a layer of incompletely fermented cake fertilizer or chicken manure, etc. on the surface of the potting soil, then spray water to moisten it. While the fertilizer ferments, it will release heat and make the soil loose. Note, never sprinkle too much, to avoid burning the roots.

3. Directly spread a layer of worm castings on the pot surface. You can pick some up from the grass, or buy some worm castings online. Not only can it make the potting soil loose and breathable, it is also full of nutrients.

To avoid potting soil compaction, when planting flowers, it is best to use loose and breathable soil. When you have not bought professional nutrient soil, if you use garden soil for planting, it is best to add a little coarse sand to it, which is the least troublesome method.
