Eggs are very rich in protein and minerals. The main component of leftover eggshells is calcium, so eggshells are also an excellent fertilizer for growing flowers. Composting with eggshells can effectively promote plant growth. Of course, their uses are not just limited to composting; they have many other purposes as well.

1. Fertilizing

To use eggshells as flower fertilizer, you first need to sterilize the shells at high temperature, preferably by boiling them in water, which removes the residual egg white in the shells. Then crush the shells and put them in a sunny spot to dry in the sun. After that, you can mix them into the soil, or spread them on the surface of the potting soil, so they can provide nutrients for the plants.

Eggshells decompose rather slowly, so it is best to crush them as finely as possible, which speeds up decomposition. Of course, grinding them into powder works even better. Calcium is very helpful for the growth of plant roots and stems. We can also soak the crushed eggshells in vinegar, which speeds up their decomposition and makes them very convenient to use.

2. Pest prevention

If snails and other mollusks frequently visit your flower pots, the leaves, roots and stems of the plants can easily be eaten bare. If not dealt with in time, problems can easily arise for the plants. Spread the crushed eggshells evenly over the surface of the potting soil, and then you no longer need to worry about these mollusks invading your flowers.

3. Decoration

Properly prepared eggshells make excellent decorations. Especially whole eggshells: after cleaning off the egg white, placing them upside down on the surface of the potting soil can serve a decorative purpose. You can even paint designs on the eggshells, turning them into a beautiful sight.

Nowadays, not only is growing flowers very popular, growing vegetables on the balcony is nothing new either. During the growth of plants such as tomatoes and peppers, a large amount of calcium is needed. If calcium is lacking, black rot or lodging can easily occur, so eggshells can be put to great use.
