When you mention the Oncidium orchid, what is the first impression that comes to mind? Its soft, delicate shape and cute, charming flowers? The Oncidium orchid, also known as the golden butterfly orchid, is an orchid family plant, a variety with good fragrance and a large number of flowers, so it has long been deeply loved by orchid growers everywhere and holds a fairly high place among the many orchids. Oncidium orchids easily get yellow, dried buds, so what should you do? How do you grow them so the flowers are more fragrant and the leaves even more elegant?

First we need to understand the habits of the Oncidium orchid: it likes a warm, humid and semi-shaded environment, is not cold-tolerant, tolerates semi-shade, and fears dryness and strong direct sunlight. The suitable growing temperature is 12-23 degrees, with 30%-50% shading in summer. Once you are familiar with the habits of the Oncidium orchid, getting it to fill out its pot is very simple.

1. Watering.

The Oncidium orchid likes a humid environment and fears dryness, so its water requirements are fairly high, but it fears root rot if overwatered. Watering takes three years to master, and watering really is a skill. During the growing period, the Oncidium orchid needs a large amount of water; during this time just keep the potting soil from getting too dry, then in autumn reduce the frequency of watering, and in winter it basically needs no watering. You can use a plant and flower detector to check the soil moisture; just insert it into the potting soil and it displays changes in soil moisture, nutrients and humidity on your phone, making growing plants very simple.

2. Temperature control. If you want your Oncidium orchid to fill out its pot, you must get this temperature right. Its favorite temperature is around 12-25 degrees. In hot summer weather like now, we can mist around the Oncidium orchid once each in the morning, at noon and in the evening to lower the surrounding ambient temperature. If you let it grow unchecked in the hot summer, it easily develops various leaf diseases, and even basic health is hard to guarantee. Especially during the special period when it is blooming, you must control the temperature.

3. Nutrition. The Oncidium orchid needs a large amount of nutrients. If you want to grow it well, with elegant leaves and a stronger fragrance, fertilizer is indispensable. Fertilizing should follow the principle of light fertilizer applied frequently, because the root system of the Oncidium orchid has relatively poor absorption capacity, and fertilizer that is too concentrated easily causes fertilizer burn and death.

Use Huadongde orchid-specific organic nutrient solution, purely plant-fermented, rich in organic matter, and easy to absorb. It is recommended to fertilize once about every 10-15 days, either by watering the roots or spraying the leaves, just use it according to the instructions, but do not fertilize during the flowering period, and when fertilizing the soil should be dry; the day after fertilizing, water back to avoid fertilizer burn.

4. Light. All plants need light, because they need photosynthesis, just as people need oxygen. The Oncidium orchid has fairly high light requirements; if it does not see the sun for a long time, it will not bloom. So usually in the evening or morning, take it out to bask in the sun. At noon, direct sun easily scorches its delicate self, so just take it back indoors to a cool, ventilated place.

The Oncidium orchid is fairly delicate, but when you think of it blooming, with fragrance filling the whole room and refreshing the heart, everything is worth it!
