When Does Snapdragon Bloom

Snapdragon is a perennial herbaceous plant that can be grown in pots. Because of its brilliant flower colors, it is very suitable for ornamental viewing. It gets its name because its flowers look like goldfish. It is also a traditional Chinese medicine, with effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, cooling blood and reducing swelling. Now let us take a look at when snapdragon blooms!

When Does Snapdragon Bloom

Snapdragon is generally suitable for sowing in late August or September, and will bloom in April to May of the following year. When seedlings are raised in a cold frame in early spring or sown in spring and summer, it can bloom in June to July or September to October. Of course, in this case it will not grow as well as autumn-sown plants, and the flowering period will be shorter. For those used as cut flowers in winter, it is often sown in late summer, cultivated in the open field, moved into a greenhouse when autumn turns cool, and kept at 22°C during the day and above 10°C at night in both autumn and winter, and it can also bloom successively in December.

What Is the Flower Language of Snapdragon

The flower language of snapdragon is lively and bustling, arrogance, talkativeness, meddlesomeness, deception, strength, and so on. The flower language of pink snapdragon is happy reunion, red snapdragon is good fortune, yellow snapdragon is wealth filling the hall, purple snapdragon is great prominence, and variegated snapdragon is huge profits.

How to Grow Snapdragon Best

1. Soil: Snapdragon does not have very high requirements for soil, but it grows best in fertile, loose, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy loam.

2. Watering: Snapdragon is very sensitive to moisture. The potting soil must be kept moist. When growing seedlings in pots, it must also be watered thoroughly, but the potting soil must have good drainage and must not become waterlogged, otherwise it will easily cause root rot as well as yellowing and wilting of stems and leaves.

3. Sunlight: Snapdragon is a light-loving herbaceous plant and needs to grow under conditions of sufficient sunlight. The plant is dwarf and compact in clumps, grows neatly, remains uniform in height, blooms uniformly, and has bright flower colors. If grown under semi-shaded conditions, the plant will grow taller, the inflorescence will elongate, and the flower colors will be dull.

4. Temperature: Snapdragon is relatively cold-tolerant but not heat-tolerant. The most suitable temperature for growth is 7-10°C. High temperatures are unfavorable for growth and development, while the most suitable temperature for flowering is around 15-16°C. For some varieties, if the temperature exceeds 15°C, they will not branch and the plant form will be affected.

5. Fertilizing: Strengthening the management of fertilizer and water is necessary. When fertilizing, even more attention should be paid to the combination of phosphorus, potassium, and so on, because it itself has root nodules and therefore has the function of nitrogen fixation, so under normal circumstances there is no need to apply nitrogen fertilizer. During the growing season, combine watering with applying fermented oil residue water once every half month, and before fertilizing, also loosen the soil and remove weeds appropriately.

6. Pruning: For snapdragon, only after each flowering ends should the branches that have already bloomed be cut off, so as to better promote the sprouting of new branches and continued flowering.
