What to Do When Bonsai Ficus Leaves Turn Yellow

Bonsai ficus is a sculpted landscape that symbolizes vitality, so maintaining the continuation of its life and growth becomes the inevitable purpose of its care and management. However, yellowing leaves often occur during actual cultivation, and there are many reasons that cause bonsai ficus leaves to turn yellow. Let's take a look below at what to do when bonsai ficus leaves turn yellow!

Water-induced yellowing

The young leaves of bonsai ficus turn dull yellow and lose their luster, while the old leaves show no obvious change; the branches are thin and yellow-green, and the new shoots shrivel and stop growing. This indicates overwatering. Remove the plant from its pot, place it in a ventilated, shady spot to let the soil ball dry naturally, then put it back in the pot.

Drought-induced yellowing

The yellowing caused by a lack of water in bonsai ficus differs from that caused by excess water. Drought-induced yellowing shows as leaf tips or edges becoming scorched and dry, with old leaves turning yellow and dropping from the bottom up, while new leaves grow relatively normally. Just make sure to water thoroughly and soak the soil well.

Sunburn-induced yellowing

Strong direct sunlight hitting the bonsai ficus easily causes the leaf tips and leaf edges to scorch, and yellow spots appear on the sun-facing parts of the leaves. Simply move it to a shady spot.

Light deficiency

If bonsai ficus leaves are kept in a shaded environment for a long time, the leaves cannot get enough sunlight and cannot form chlorophyll. The entire plant's leaves turn yellow and then drop. Supplementing light can prevent this problem.

Fertilizer-induced yellowing

Yellowing of bonsai ficus leaves caused by excessive fertilization or overly high concentration shows as dry brown tips on new leaves; generally the leaf surface is thick and loses its luster, and is uneven and not spread out, while old leaves turn scorched yellow and drop. Stop fertilizing immediately; in severe cases, use a large amount of water to flush out some of the fertilizer.

Fertilizer deficiency

Fertilizer deficiency in bonsai ficus shows as young leaves becoming lighter in color, turning yellow or pale green, while old leaves remain relatively normal or gradually turn from green to yellow. Check the potting soil; if there is caking, replace the soil, usually apply light fertilizer frequently and water with some alum water at the appropriate time.
