Can Adiantum be grown hydroponically?

Adiantum is also known as wire grass, maidenhair, iron-wire grass, water pig bristle soil, and so on. Because its stems are slender and resemble iron wire in color, it is named Adiantum. It has strong adaptability, is easy to cultivate, and has extremely high ornamental value. With a graceful and elegant plant shape, it is one of the most common green plants in homes. Now let us take a look at whether Adiantum can be grown hydroponically!

Can Adiantum be grown hydroponically?

Adiantum can be grown hydroponically. Adiantum likes a humid environment. The suitable growing temperature is 21-25°C during the day and 12-15°C at night. At temperatures above 5°C the leaves can still remain fresh and green, but below 5°C the leaves will suffer cold damage. It likes bright indirect light and fears direct sun exposure. It is one of the common hydroponic plants.

Hydroponic methods for Adiantum

First wash the roots of Adiantum clean, disinfect them with potassium permanganate, then find a container, add clean water, and match it with nutrient solution in the appropriate ratio (nutrient solution can be bought on the market), or fix it in place at the mouth of the container or on the water surface. Adiantum is best planted on coral stone, just stick it on, then place the coral stone in water. After it survives, it grows very well. When growing hydroponically, note that the coral stone must be soaked in water to remove salt, the water must not cover the head of the Adiantum, and in order to let the stone grow moss, it cannot be kept indoors for a long time.

Hydroponic management of Adiantum

1. Changing water: in hot weather change the water every 15-20 days, in cold weather about once every one and a half months. The water level should reach three-quarters of the way up the root system, and at the same time mist the leaf surface frequently.

2. Temperature: Adiantum likes warmth. The suitable growing temperature for the environment is 13~22°C. Planting in spring in the south is excellent, and it also works in the north, but because Adiantum is not tolerant of high temperatures, the care methods are also different.

3. Light: Adiantum likes a semi-shaded environment. Never let Adiantum receive direct sunlight. It is suitable for growing in partial shade, and ordinary indirect light is enough. Avoid light in summer, and avoid strong direct light.

4. Fertilizing: hydroponic Adiantum should use foliage plant nutrient solution.

5. Pruning: after early autumn, as the temperature drops, Adiantum enters a slow-growth stage, and old leaves will gradually turn yellow. At this time they should be cut off.
