Classification of violet varieties

There are many horticultural varieties of violets. By height, they can be divided into 3 types: tall, medium and dwarf. By flowering period, they can be divided into winter violet, spring violet and summer violet. By petals, they can be divided into single-petaled and double-petaled types. The main cultivated varieties include the white "Ida", the pale yellow "Carmen", the red "Francesco", the purple "Abella" and the light purple-red "Incana", etc. Let's take a look together below!

Classification by height

Violets are divided by plant height into 3 types: tall, medium and dwarf. All types can be grown in pots. Medium and dwarf types are used for flower beds, generally 30-40 cm in plant height, while tall types are used for cut flowers, generally 60-90 cm in plant height.

Classification by flowering period

Violets can be divided by flowering period into winter violet, spring violet and summer violet. Winter violets are sown in autumn and winter and bloom in winter and spring, summer violets are sown in spring and bloom in summer, and autumn violets are obtained by crossing winter violet and summer violet varieties and can be grown as annuals or biennials.

Classification by flower shape

Violets are divided by flower shape into two strains: single-petaled and double-petaled. In the double-petaled strain, after sowing, both single-petaled and double-petaled flowers appear. Double-petaled flowers have high ornamental value, but their stamens and pistils have all become petal-like and cannot set seeds; only single-petaled flowers can set seeds. Good seeds should produce about 80% of plants bearing double-petaled flowers. Single-petaled flowers should be cultivated in a place with sufficient light and good ventilation to facilitate seed maturity.
