The historical legend of the touch-me-not
It is said that long, long ago, in Longxi, Fujian, there was a girl named Fengxian, who was slender and graceful, gentle and kind by nature, and in love with a young man named Jintong. One day, the son of the county magistrate passed by this place, saw how pretty and lovely Fengxian was, and immediately conceived evil intentions, coming over to harass her. Fengxian gave him a good scolding, and he slunk away in disgrace. Fengxian knew she had stirred up great trouble, and that the magistrate's son would surely come to make trouble. So she decided to flee to another place together with Jintong. Fengxian had only her father, while Jintong had his mother. The two elders and the two young people set off overnight to flee far away to another land. On the way, Jintong's mother fell ill, with amenorrhea and abdominal pain, and there was nowhere in the wild mountains and ridges to seek a doctor or medicine, so the four of them had to stop and rest.
Meanwhile, when the county magistrate heard that his son had been given a dressing-down by a village girl, he ordered his men to come and arrest Fengxian. Seeing that they were about to catch up, and with no other way out, Fengxian and Jintong bade farewell to their parents and leaped into a bottomless abyss to show their purity. The two old people forced back their grief and buried Fengxian and Jintong together. At night the two old people lay down beside the grave. That night, Fengxian and Jintong appeared to their parents in a dream, telling them that the flowers blooming in the mountain stream could cure the mother's illness. When they woke the next day, they indeed saw the mountain stream full of red flowers and white flowers, the red like morning clouds, the white like pure silver. The old people picked the flowers and boiled them into a decoction, and after taking it, the illness was truly cured at once. Later, people named this flower the touch-me-not in memory of them.
