Hsinchu City Promotes Environmental Education, Holds Creative Teaching

(Taiwan Business News) To pass on the concepts and practices of environmental education, the Hsinchu City Environmental Protection Bureau commissioned Xiangshan District's Jiadong Elementary School, which has considerable experience in promoting environmental education, to hold two sessions of the 103rd Year Environmental Creative Teaching Workshop on April 17 and May 1 of Year 103, hoping that the school teachers, community residents and personnel from various city government units participating in this event will be more adept when carrying out the annual 4-hour environmental education work for their employees.

The organizer of this event, Jiadong Elementary School, was selected as the first-place winner in the school category of Hsinchu City's "Second National Environmental Education Award." In shouldering the responsibility of protecting the environment and educating children, the school sought opportunities and a path forward, taking "localization and experiential learning" as the axis of innovative teaching, building a new model of environmental education, and putting into practice the philosophy of "from management to operation, turning projects into curricula." Through "greening, beautification, ecologicalization and curricularization," it guides the overall creation of the school environment; teachers, students and parents work hand in hand to protect and build an environmental ecology park, leading Jiadong's children to take all things in nature as their teachers, to get close to nature, respect life, and treat all living things and the environment with kindness.

In this session of the workshop, Principal Liu Yun-yi explained the creation of the campus and community ecological environment. The school's teachers and students worked together from campus renovation to the successful breeding of butterflies, creating the Song of Butterflies, making environmental education as vivid and moving as dancing butterflies. The second class was also the school's sharing of promoting environmental education through art and craft courses, explained by Director Huang Wen-ling of Jiadong Elementary School, winner of the 102nd Year Teacher Excellence Award, on DIY creations from recycled materials - "Recycled Roll Transform, Transform, Transform," using discarded recycled toilet paper rolls, cardboard, napkin butterflies, decoupage glue, acrylic paint, wallpaper, ribbons and other materials to lead the participants in creating ingenious multifunctional "storage tubes" and "plant pot covers," and thoughtfully preparing small indoor potted plants for everyone, so that the works and plants could be placed on office desks, combining environmental protection and health concepts. Besides working hard with their hands, the participants on site also took this opportunity to exchange environmental education experience with one another, brainstorming more diverse and wonderful teaching ideas.
