Production area distribution of Bupleurum

Bupleurum, also known as bamboo-leaf Bupleurum and grasshopper leg, is a medicinal herb listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The medicinal part is the dried root of the Umbelliferae plant Bupleurum chinense or Bupleurum scorzonerifolium. It is harvested in spring and autumn, with the stems, leaves, mud and sand removed, then dried. There are northern and southern Bupleurum types. Let us take a look at their production area distribution below!

Production area distribution of northern Bupleurum

Northern Bupleurum, also known as bamboo-leaf Bupleurum, hard-seedling Bupleurum, chive-leaf Bupleurum (Anhui), Tianjin Bupleurum, etc., grows in relatively dry mountain slopes, fields and roadsides. Its production areas are distributed in Northeast China, North China, East China, Central South China, Southwest China, as well as Shaanxi, Gansu and other places.

It is mainly produced in Northeast China as well as Henan Province, Hebei Province and Shaanxi Province, and is also produced in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Shanxi Province and Gansu Province.

Production area distribution of southern Bupleurum

Bupleurum scorzonerifolium is commonly called southern Bupleurum, and is mainly produced in Northeast China, Shaanxi Province, Inner Mongolia, Hebei Province, Jiangsu Province, Anhui Province and other places.

Production area environment of Bupleurum

Bupleurum often grows wild in mountainous areas below 1,500 m in altitude, on barren slopes of hills, in grass clusters, roadsides, forest edges and gaps in forests. It has strong adaptability, prefers a slightly cool and moist climate, is relatively resistant to cold and drought, and avoids high temperatures and waterlogged low-lying areas.

Bupleurum seeds have a physiological after-ripening phenomenon, and stratification treatment can promote after-ripening, but under dry conditions, the after-ripening process can also be completed after 4—5 months. The suitable germination temperature is 15-25°C, the germination rate can reach 50%-60%, the seed lifespan is 1 year, and the suitable temperature for plant growth is 20-25°C.
