(Taiwan Business News) To ensure consumer rights, the Consumer Service Center of the Taichung City Government will station staff at the Taichung World Trade Center during the "2014 Taichung International Travel Fair" from April 25 to 28 to set up a gift voucher health check center and provide gift voucher health check services for consumers. The Legal Affairs Bureau of the Taichung City Government held a promotional press conference yesterday (the 23rd). Deputy Mayor Tsai Ping-kun stated that the city government will amend the Taichung City Consumer Protection Self-Governance Ordinance to increase the responsibilities of exhibition organizers and related penalties, in order to ensure consumer rights.
Deputy Mayor Tsai stated that all kinds of exhibitions are welcome to be held in Taichung, because they can stimulate consumption and increase buying momentum, further allowing consumers to get more discounts, which the city government is happy to see, but consumer rights must also be protected. Since October of the 101st year of the Republic of China (2012), the city government has set up a booth at the travel fair site to provide gift voucher health check services, helping consumers identify problems with gift vouchers and requiring businesses that sold problematic gift vouchers to make improvements. Last year, a total of 657 gift voucher health checks were conducted (216 in October and 441 in November), and 20 cases were found in which gift vouchers had no performance guarantee, showing good results.
Lin Yueh-tsao, Director-General of the Legal Affairs Bureau of the Taichung City Government, stated that in the satisfaction survey, as many as 98 percent of the public were very satisfied with the gift voucher health check service, allowing them to buy legal and discounted gift vouchers during the travel fair, and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications also gave high recognition.
Deputy Mayor Tsai said that Taichung City hopes to create a protected consumer environment, and all businesses participating in exhibitions in Taichung City should comply with the relevant self-governance ordinances of Taichung City. The city government is studying adding the responsibilities of exhibition organizers and related penalties to the Taichung City Consumer Protection Self-Governance Ordinance. Exhibition organizers that are capable of organizing exhibitions must also ensure that participating businesses are quality businesses.
