Propagation methods for honeysuckle

The scientific name of honeysuckle is Lonicera japonica. Because the flowers first open white and later turn yellow, it is called honeysuckle. There are two propagation methods in honeysuckle cultivation, namely seed propagation and cutting propagation.

Seed propagation

In autumn, when honeysuckle seeds mature, collect the ripe fruit, rub it in clean water, skim off the fruit skin and impurities, pick out the plump seeds that sink to the bottom, and dry and store them for later use. When planting, open furrows on the seedbed with a row spacing of several cm wide, evenly scatter the seeds into the furrows, cover with 3 cm of soil, and press firm. Seedlings emerge in about 10 days.

Cutting propagation

For honeysuckle cutting propagation, select vines with vigorous growth, cut them into cuttings about 30 cm long, each with at least 3 nodes, remove the leaves, cut the lower end into a slanted opening, tie them into small bundles, soak the cut ends briefly in the plant hormone IAA at 500 mg/kg (500 ppm), and insert them while fresh. Dig holes, insert 3-5 cuttings per hole, leave 1/3 of the stem above ground, with at least one bud exposed above the soil surface, tread firmly, and water thoroughly. Roots and sprouts will form in about 1 month.
