"Kanchang, the national targeted poverty alleviation program will provide a 50,000 yuan subsidized loan with interest discounts to every impoverished household that starts a business. You get the materials ready, and I will help you apply, so you won't have to worry about development funds anymore!" Recently, Yang Xinjian, First Secretary stationed in Sunzhuang Village, Youfangdian Township, from the United Front Work Department of Zhengyang County, came to the rex rabbit farm of Peng Kanchang, the impoverished household he is paired with to help, bringing him new policies and good news.

Peng Kanchang, 40 this year, is from Sunzhuang Village, Youfangdian Township. Both his parents are over 70, his mother is disabled, and the family is poor. When Peng Kanchang married, his wife Yang Jindi was already disabled and unable to do heavy work. The whole family relied on him alone working away from home year-round to make a living. When Yang Xinjian was stationed in Sunzhuang Village, he became the impoverished household paired with the First Secretary for assistance.

"Although Peng Kanchang is poor, he has the confidence and drive to rely on himself." Yang Xinjian said that when he saw Peng Kanchang had the drive to endure hardship and stand on his own feet, he thought of ways to help him develop rex rabbit farming, helping Peng Kanchang get rich and shake off poverty.

Peng Kanchang began trying to raise rex rabbits in 2012. In September 2013, he borrowed more than 100,000 yuan from relatives and friends and built 6 breeding sheds outside the village. In 2014, because the market was down and feed prices rose, the six or seven hundred rex rabbits Peng Kanchang kept ate nearly 20,000 yuan worth of feed each month, and that year he lost nearly 30,000 yuan.

In September 2015, Zhengyang County fully launched targeted poverty alleviation through village-stationed work. Since Peng Kanchang was paired with Yang Xinjian, Yang Xinjian has actively coordinated project funds for him from the county agriculture office and coordinated land at the township level to help him expand the scale of his farm and encourage nearby villagers to raise rex rabbits together as a group. The Federation of Industry and Commerce of the United Front Work Department of the county mobilized non-public enterprises across the county to actively take part in the county's targeted poverty alleviation assistance activities, and Peng Kanchang was fortunate enough to also become the assistance target of Liu Jian, general manager of Baibeijia Sanitary Products Co., Ltd., a county-invested enterprise.

"With the support and assistance of the government and Secretary Yang, my confidence in shaking off poverty has multiplied. Next, I want to expand the scale and improve farming efficiency," Peng Kanchang said confidently. At present, Peng Kanchang's rex rabbit farm has developed to more than 200 female rabbits, with more than 2,000 rex rabbits on hand, nearly 600 sold per month, and annual income reaching 30,000 yuan.
