Passion fruit is also called egg fruit, but it tastes good and bears a lot of fruit. Once ripe, the fruit can be used in cooking, eaten as a fruit, or brewed into a drink. It has a fragrant aroma, with the scent of guava, banana, mango and other fruits, which is why it is praised as passion fruit. It is nutritious and delicious. If you want to grow a passion fruit plant at home, you do not need to buy a seedling. Just find some seeds to sow or take a section of stem for cutting propagation.

Tips for growing passion fruit

To grow passion fruit from seed, when you eat a passion fruit, keep the seeds inside. Any fresh seeds will do.

After sowing them in a flower pot, cover the seeds with 2 cm of soil and water thoroughly. With suitable temperatures, they will sprout in a week. In a few months they can grow to over 1 m tall.

To grow passion fruit from cuttings, find a passion fruit stem about 20 cm long and insert it into soil or sand. Both spring and autumn work. In less than a month it will take root and sprout.

Passion fruit seedlings grown from cuttings grow a bit slowly at first when they have just sprouted, but after that they grow nonstop and the vines climb especially long.

If you are growing passion fruit as a potted plant at home, choose a pot with a larger diameter and greater depth. This way the passion fruit grows especially fast and produces many flowers and fruits.

If you want passion fruit on an enclosed balcony to set fruit successfully, when it blooms, the petals contain stamens and pistils. Use a cotton swab or a brush to transfer a little pollen from the stamens onto the pistils, and you will get plenty of fruit.

When growing passion fruit, apply plenty of base fertilizer, such as cake fertilizer, chicken manure fertilizer or farmyard manure, all of which are fine. When the vines start to climb, apply some nitrogen fertilizer so the vines grow faster and cover half the balcony.

When it blooms, it needs more fertilizer. If your passion fruit is grown in a yard or on a terrace, you can use a little child's waste as fertilizer, and the passion fruit will grow more luxuriantly and bear a great deal of fruit.

If you choose to grow passion fruit from a seedling, it is best to choose one after you have seen it flower and set fruit.

A bountiful harvest of passion fruit.
