Bougainvillea is one of the common flowers in courtyards, flower beds and gardens. Its advantage lies in the fact that its flowering period lasts a very long time and it can achieve continuous blooming. Therefore, whether in places such as Europe and America, or in most areas of our country, bougainvillea is very popular. So today I will explain to you how to cultivate bougainvillea so that it can bloom well both indoors and outdoors.

1. Light and temperature

Bougainvillea is a sun-loving plant, so no matter which period it is in, it cannot lack the necessary light. If the light intensity is insufficient or the duration is too short, the plant's branches, petals and other parts will be greatly affected, especially with regard to its flowering. In mild cases, the flower color will not be good enough and there will be fewer flowers; in severe cases, it may even cause the plant to be unable to bloom. The daily sunshine duration must not be less than 9 hours. Usually the plant can begin to bloom at around two months. On the other hand, bougainvillea is relatively tolerant of high temperatures. When the temperature is 16-30 degrees, the plant's growth will develop in a good direction, while low temperatures must not fall below 8 degrees, otherwise the plant will easily suffer frostbite or a large number of leaves will fall off.

2. Soil

For the growing medium of bougainvillea, it is still better to use a relatively common mix of river sand soil, sandy soil and garden soil. If you feel the soil conditions are not fertile enough, you can add an appropriate amount of decomposed cake fertilizer or other fertilizers. If the bougainvillea is potted, the soil can be used for about 1-2 years before it needs to be replaced once. It should be noted that keeping the soil pH slightly acidic is more suitable for the growth of bougainvillea. In addition, when changing the soil, do not wipe off the old soil attached to the plant. When removing the plant, take it out together with the roots and soil, so that the bougainvillea will not develop a certain rejection reaction in the new soil due to complicated reasons, thereby affecting the plant's growth.

3. Watering

In spring, bougainvillea should maintain the habit of watering once a day, and when appropriate it can also be increased to twice a day. The best time for watering is in the early morning or evening. When summer comes, the water demand of bougainvillea will increase. At this time, it must be watered twice a day, usually once in the morning and once again in the evening. If the temperature exceeds 35 degrees, the plant needs appropriate shading or sprinkling with water. In autumn and winter, the metabolism of bougainvillea is relatively slow, so the water demand also becomes less, and it is only necessary to keep the soil moist.

4. Pruning

Bougainvillea grows relatively fast, so its branches and leaves need regular maintenance. Generally speaking, when pruning, priority should be given to cutting off dead branches, weak branches, diseased branches and other branches, so as to ensure that the remaining robust branches can absorb more nutrients. The next pruning is for overall aesthetics, cutting off or shortening some overly long branches and leggy branches. The best time for pruning is spring and summer. Otherwise, pruning at other times is very likely to affect the flowering of bougainvillea.

5. Pest and disease prevention

Bougainvillea's disease resistance is still relatively good. If there are certain pests and diseases, they generally appear mostly in spring and autumn. The common reason is a sudden change in the environment, so in daily management, pay more attention to changes in the environment, such as temperature, rain and other conditions, and promptly take certain preventive measures to avoid damage to the plant.

As long as you learn and master the above five points, your bougainvillea, whether indoors or outdoors, can bloom into a sea of flowers that satisfies you!
