What Are the Market Prospects for Meat Goose Farming? An Analysis of Its Development Potential

Some livestock experts believe that the goose industry is a sunrise project with huge development potential worldwide. At present, the domestic and international market demand for goose meat exceeds supply. China's annual demand for geese is 800-900 million birds, while the number raised is only about 600 million birds. It is predicted that Shanghai needs 20 million geese per year, Guangzhou needs 70-80 million per year, Guangxi also needs around 70 million per year, and Hong Kong, China needs 100,000 per day. On the international market, demand for goose meat also shows a clear upward trend, with a predicted shortfall of around 200 million birds.
The nutritional value of goose products also fits the current trend of green and healthy consumption, and goose foie gras in particular is recognised worldwide as one of the three great delicacies. According to Tao Zhengrong, an expert at the Institute of Animal Husbandry of the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the nutritional value of goose foie gras is several times that of pork, with unsaturated fatty acids reaching 60%, and it has multiple benefits such as preventing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, lowering cholesterol and scavenging free radicals.
It is reported that in the meat market consumption share, goose meat has risen from 1% 10 years ago to 4%, and is still on an upward trend.
The increase in goose meat consumption has brought generous returns to farmers. Buying one gosling costs 2-5 yuan, and it can be sold after 65-70 days of rearing, with a total cost of 15-16 yuan; calculated at a selling price of 12 yuan per jin, one goose can sell for about 70 yuan, yielding a profit of 40 yuan. Geese are herbivorous poultry, with characteristics such as low grain consumption, small input, high output, ease of rearing, high efficiency and suitability for farm households, making them very suitable for rearing in our province, and it is precisely because of these characteristics thatgoose farminghas been listed by the Ministry of Agriculture of China as a preferred project for developing the rural economy and helping farmers become prosperous.
