Reaching middle age, do not drink three kinds of wine.
Do not drink to the point of drunkenness
Reaching middle age, the body is on the decline; getting drunk once is equal to getting acute hepatitis once, and does no good to health.
Reaching middle age, the burden of the whole family, old and young, rests on your shoulders; drinking ruins things, and getting drunk once easily brings big trouble.
Reaching middle age, you must have a bottom line in your heart; in social dealings, you must gauge the limits. Those with true affection will not force you to drink or make you uncomfortable.
Do not drink wine with no proper reason
Reaching middle age, you must stand firm, with the whole family, old and young, on your shoulders; do not take risks. If a drinking gathering has no proper purpose, do not join it.
Drinking should have a proper reason; do not accept every invitation, so that those who want to force drinks have no opening. Learn to refuse and keep the right measure.
If you do not absolutely have to drink a glass, do not go to the tavern. Reaching middle age, cultivating body and mind, with clear tea and books, is the way to prolong life.
Do not drink wine offered without respect
At the drinking table, with those who are not on good terms and who mock you between the lines, it is better not to drink with them.
Love and hate should be clear; do not lower your own worth. If you look down on me, I also look down on you.
Reaching middle age, you must have backbone; there is no need to press a cold face to a warm backside.
02
Reaching middle age, do not compare three things.
Do not compare wealth
Among relatives and friends, do not compare wealth. Money cannot buy happiness, cannot buy joy.
Money does not need to be too much; enough is good.
Rich or not, everyone eats three meals and sleeps one sleep.
If a person does not understand contentment, no amount of money brings happiness. The content are rich; being content with modest wealth is happiness.
Do not compare children
Children have their own path; do not compare other people's children with your own child.
However good other people's children are, you would not be willing to trade, would you?
Whether a child achieves much is not so important. Good health and peace are blessings.
Do not compare houses
The size of a house is not important; a family living in harmony is quite good.
The location of a house is not important; what matters is the place home holds in the heart.
The decoration of a house is not important; warmth and joy are better than anything.
03
Reaching middle age, do not visit three kinds of relatives.
Do not visit snobbish relatives
When rich, even in deep mountains there are distant relatives; when poor, even in a busy market no one knows you.
Many relatives are not drawn to the person, but to the profit.
When you are successful, they circle around you. When you are down, they watch from the side.
When you are high, they flatter; when you are low, they trample.
Such relatives are better left unvisited.
Do not visit relatives who calculate too much
Relatives who calculate everywhere should not be visited.
They seize every advantage and will not take the slightest loss.
Haggling over every ounce, blinded by profit.
They recognize money, not people; such relatives are not worth associating with.
Relatives who do not understand gratitude
When they are in trouble, you spare no effort to help.
When you are in trouble, they pretend not to see.
People are mutual: how you treat me, I treat you.
Those who do not understand gratitude cannot be befriended.
Not only does it waste affection for nothing, it may even cultivate an ungrateful wretch who kicks you when you are down.
