Chunghwa Telecom Digital Life: Run Together to Save Energy and Water

(Taiwan Business News) On the 24th, Chunghwa Telecom held an employee road run in the Taipei Water Park area of the Taipei Water Museum, calling on everyone to "save energy and water" together! The event was divided into a 3 km health group and a 6 km competition group, with more than 2,400 employees and family members from Chunghwa Telecom's northern regional operating offices, branches and headquarters taking part. Chairman Li-hsin Tsai said in his speech that he hoped everyone would do their best, and thanked everyone for their efforts! 4G is about to launch, and he hoped all employees would show team spirit and "run" at the front of the industry; they must become the fastest and best 4G LTE telecom company!
Through a dedicated official website, QR Code and App, the event allowed employees to check in, watch the event broadcast and look up personal road run information, all via mobile phone, embodying "digital life."
In order to broadcast the road run live, the running process was filmed with mobile phones, with the content streamed live via UStream and shown on television screens at the venue. In addition, the organizers specially built a dedicated event website and mobile App for the event, allowing employees to view data such as their personal running speed, road run time and calories burned through the App. The official website also combined GPS and GIS map information, clearly displaying the position light points of the runners on the official website map, forming a brilliant "road run light points" display!
The organizers said that holding the event at the water treatment plant carried deep environmental significance. Since proposing the "Chunghwa Telecom Carbon Management Strategy Map" in 2008, Chunghwa Telecom has spared no effort each year in improving energy efficiency, encouraging employees to take the initiative on environmental protection and developing low-carbon products. Externally, in addition to launching energy-saving products such as the iEN "Electricity Management Service," which creates a 10-15% energy-saving rate for customers, internally it has also applied carbon reduction plans to actual business operations. Taking electronic billing as an example, in 2014 Chunghwa Telecom's customers were expected to surpass 2.2 million households; through electronic billing, about 3,700 trees can be saved from being cut down each year, reducing about 100 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, truly "loving the Earth" through action.
In addition, through the efforts of all employees, Chunghwa Telecom has also pursued its operating goal of saving energy and water. Since 2012, the company's water usage has been fully incorporated into the EARTH system. Although the growth of its ICT business increased water use for air conditioning, water usage in 2013 still showed only slight growth. Also, taking electricity usage as an example, in 2013 the company's electricity usage across all regions decreased by 0.15% compared with 2012, successfully achieving the goal of "no growth" in electricity use. Chairman Li-hsin Tsai said in his speech, "Chunghwa Telecom will fulfill its social responsibility and continue to show a firm commitment to the environment and energy use. In the future, we will continue to implement the '5-year energy-saving plan,' saving 2% of electricity each year, so that by 2015 the company's total electricity usage will be reduced by 8% compared with 2012."
