What do crabs eat in crab farming?

Crabs are omnivorous aquatic animals with a very wide range of food sources, which can be broadly divided into three categories: natural bait, artificial animal-based bait and artificial plant-based bait.

Natural bait

Any organism that crabs like to eat and that grows naturally in water or on land is called natural bait. Natural bait mainly includes phytoplankton, aquatic plants, benthic animals and terrestrial animals and plants.

1. Phytoplankton: including diatoms, golden algae, dinoflagellates, euglenoids, green algae, etc., which are food for early-stage juvenile crabs and zooplankton.

2. Zooplankton: rotifers, cladocerans, copepods, etc., which are good food for them.

3. Aquatic plants: including eelgrass (Vallisneria), Hydrilla verticillata, Potamogeton crispus, Potamogeton malaianus, duckweed (Wolffia), common duckweed, water hyacinth, alligator weed, golden hair grass, etc., which are their main natural bait.

4. Benthic animals: snails, freshwater clams (Corbicula), river mussels, aquatic earthworms, etc. in the water are excellent food for them.

5. Terrestrial animals and plants: including yellow mealworms, earthworms and ryegrass, napier grass (Pennisetum), comfrey (Symphytum), etc.

Artificial animal-based bait

Artificial animal-based bait mainly includes river snails, freshwater clams (Corbicula), river mussels, silkworm pupae, yellow mealworms, earthworms, small trash fish, fly maggots, livestock and poultry viscera, etc.

Artificial plant-basedbait

Artificial plant-based bait mainly includes soybeans, soybean cake, rapeseed cake, cottonseed cake, wheat, rice bran, soybean residue, distillers' grains, sauce residue, peanut cake, etc.

During the farming process, you cannot feed just one single type of bait; instead, you should feed a comprehensive mix according to the actual situation. Only in this way can you efficiently improve the economic returns of crab farming.
