Construction of Donghai Elementary School in Taichung City begins, enrollment in August next year

(Taiwan Business News) The population of Donghai Village and Xindong Village in Longjing District has grown rapidly. For 17 years, residents have actively sought to establish an elementary school in the area. After the merger of the county and city, a site was found at the border between Xitun and Longjing, and nearly 150 million yuan was allocated to build "Donghai Elementary School." In the future, students will be less than 500 m from the school. The groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday (the 5th), and enrollment is expected in August next year.
Taichung Mayor Jason Hu said that the county government had planned to build an elementary school since more than 10 years ago, but it was delayed due to land and funding problems. After the merger of the county and city, he learned that the Donghai community had a large student population but that going to school was very inconvenient, so he immediately decided to build an elementary school to meet local educational needs. This is also the first elementary school born after the merger.
Taichung Mayor Jason Hu pointed out that the construction of a new school should be eligible for subsidies from the central Ministry of Education, but the Ministry of Education would not be able to provide subsidies until 3 years later. "The local area has already waited too long!" Therefore, the city government allocated nearly 150 million yuan on its own, and is expected to build school buildings that match the characteristics of the Donghai community's "International Street" and "Art Street," making it a model school. Taichung City Council Speaker Lin Shih-chang, Legislator Yen Kuan-heng, City Councilor Huang Hsi-chia and others also thanked Mayor Hu for his full support, allowing the dream that local residents had hoped for for more than 10 years to finally come true. Speaker Lin also said that in the future he will actively seek nearby Taiwan Sugar Corporation land as the site for the next stage of school expansion.
Huang Che-wei, director-general of the Donghai Elementary School in Taichung City, said that Donghai Elementary School covers an area of about 1.4 hectares and will include classrooms, offices, a library, a running track and other facilities. Enrollment is expected in August next year, mainly for students from Donghai Village, with about 18 to 24 classes and no more than 28 students per class. The first principal will be Lin Chia.
Lin Chia, principal of Donghai Elementary School in Taichung City, also said that future school management will incorporate the two local elements of "international education" and "aesthetic literacy," combine the community resources of "International Street" and "Art Street," and develop the school's highlights around four main axes: national identity, international literacy, global competitiveness, and global responsibility.
