Winter Feeding and Management Techniques for Black Cavies

Climate characteristics in winter: low temperatures, little sunshine, and insufficient green feed and vitamins are not conducive to the growth and development of black cavies. The physique of the cavies declines, and pneumonia, miscarriage, and other problems may occur. Therefore, the following measures should be taken in winter:

Feed more succulent feed, such as: radish greens, sugarcane tail leaves, carrots, Chinese cabbage leaves, ryegrass, etc. Also feed hay and vitamin C powder in combination to ensure normal reproduction of black cavies.

Add dry grass as bedding in the cavy shed, keep the interior dry, reduce indoor ventilation, and keep the indoor temperature relatively stable.

Keep the relative air humidity inside the shed between 40% and 60%.

Black cavies consume a lot of energy in winter. In order to enhance their cold resistance, more energy feed should be provided.

It is best to stagger births to avoid the cold winter season. If births occur in winter, good insulation work should be done, and sunlight should be increased in the shed or infrared lamps should be installed to improve the survival rate of newborn cavies and reduce losses.
