Breeding Techniques for Black Guinea Pigs

Black guinea pigs reach sexual maturity early; they can be mated and bred 60 days after birth, producing 5-6 litters per year, with 5-9 young per litter, and a single sow can cyclically breed 40-60 young per year.

When mating, select breeding guinea pigs that are plump in build, with thick strong bones, bright eyes, glossy coat color, soft and elastic skin, and normally developed reproductive organs. The estrus period of the sow lasts 1-18 hours. After mating, a gelatinous plug and secretory mixture appear at the sow's vaginal opening; whether mating was successful can be judged by the presence or absence of the plug. Under normal circumstances, original stock breeding uses a one-male-one-female mating method. In large-group rearing, 2-3 sows are usually placed with 1 boar for mating, but care must be taken not to place more than 2 boars together at the same time, otherwise it will cause fighting and affect mating.

The sow's gestation lasts about 68 days, and she can give birth to 1-6 young; after weaning at 15 days, the young are separated and fed. The sow can be mated again right after giving birth and weaning; mating within half a day after the sow gives birth can all improve the mating success rate and reproduction rate.
