Kaohsiung City Cieding Coast Restoration Phase 2 Project Completed

(Taiwan Business Daily News) The Kaohsiung City Government held a completion ceremony for the Cieding Coast Restoration and Landscape Phase 2 Project, presenting a completely different seawall scenery at Cieding, with crowds flocking on holidays. Mayor Chen Chu stated that the Cieding coastline is long and beautiful, and to enhance safety and aesthetics, the city government will strengthen beach protection and thicken the seawall to create a safe water-play area, and will also select suitable tree species for comprehensive planting to make the charming coast more accessible.

The Cieding coastline stretches 5.8 km. In addition to natural erosion, the coastal area is plagued by excessive artificial facilities, seawater extraction by the aquaculture industry, and messy wiring, resulting in a fragmented coastal landscape. The city government has actively promoted coastal renovation and protection work to beautify the seaside scenery, launching coastal restoration and landscape improvement projects in two phases.

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu said that Cieding has vast sea views and the natural scenery of a simple fishing village, but suffers from chaotic pipelines, habitat destruction, and water-play hazards, requiring considerable effort to rectify. She thanked the central and local governments for their division of labor and cooperation in jointly developing and restoring the Cieding coast. The city government is simultaneously carrying out revetment and planting projects. In addition to thickening the seawall, placing riprap and filling soil, and building new offshore submerged dikes to protect the national territory, it will also extensively plant suitable species such as beach morning glory (Ipomoea pes-caprae) and bitter liana (Paederia foetida) to reduce dust and enhance recreational functions.

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu stated that the frequent drowning accidents at the beach are heartbreaking, and providing a safe water-play area is the government's responsibility. The city government will coordinate with the Sixth River Management Office and other units to cooperate in maintaining the beach, preventing coastal retreat, and improving water-play safety to reduce tragedies. She also believes that environmental ecology and local development are equally important. The city government will engage in extensive communication with local cultural and historical work groups. In addition to preserving inherent cultural traditions, it will also allow Cieding to continue moving forward and create local prosperity together.

The Kaohsiung City Water Resources Bureau pointed out that this section has a total length of 1.9 km and a project cost of approximately 100 million yuan. The scope extends from south of Changshou Pavilion to the Seaside Park. The renovation focuses on reducing facilities, recreating ecological green waves, establishing buffer zones, creating recreational spaces, and connecting bicycle paths to build a friendly and accessible seawall space. At the same time, combined with tourism resources and folk activities such as the Lover's Pier, the fish market, and the Burning of the Wang Boat ceremony, Cieding will have even more maritime charm.
