How to Separate Bamboo Rats into Different Nests for Breeding?

The best time to separate bamboo rat pups is roughly 28-43 days after birth. You can carry out the separation in several rounds according to the size of the bamboo rats, separating the larger individuals first. After 3-5 days, carry out the second round of separation, and so on until all are separated.

So what benefits does this kind of nest separation offer? Now let me explain them to you:

1. It can effectively prevent the pups from accidentally eating moldy, spoiled food and developing illness, which would harm the bamboo rats' health and turn them into inferior breeding stock.

2. It can prevent fights between the mother rat and the pups, which would also cause injuries.

3. In the later stage, the mother rat's milk supply cannot keep up with the already grown pups. When the pups cannot get milk, they will keep circling around the mother, making her irritable. Long-term suckling by the pups can cause inflammation of the mother's mammary glands, and the mother rat may also injure the pups.

4. This is also good for the mother rat's next round of breeding. Early weaning helps the mother recover her body condition, come into estrus earlier, and conceive earlier.

The separated pups can be raised together in one cage. If they are to be used as breeding rats, keep good records to avoid inbreeding. Feed more fresh coarse grains, suckling pig feed containing 20% or less protein, and make sure to supply plenty of water.
