Recently a flower lover left a message saying she really loves succulents, but no matter which succulents she grows, she rarely keeps any alive for more than half a year! In fact, when people kill their succulents, 80% of the time the problem comes down to watering!

You must remember, growing succulents is not the same as growing other flowers. With other flowers, after watering, the water evaporates and the roots cycle it relatively quickly, but succulents are exactly the opposite: water evaporation and root cycling are very, very slow. If we still water succulents according to the same routine we use for other flowers, the potting soil stays too wet for too long, and their roots will be starved of oxygen and unable to breathe! The end result is nothing other than root rot and death!

So how exactly should you water succulents? Let me tell you: for watering succulents, it is best to water them once a week! Many flower lovers might say, won't that dry them out?

Actually, that problem simply doesn't exist. Succulents themselves are not afraid of drought. I once did an experiment specifically with two pots of succulents: one pot was watered once a week, and the other was watered once a month. After three months, I found that the roots of the one watered once a month were actually more developed than the roots of the one watered once a week!

So when we water succulents, we must always prefer drought over waterlogging! Remember: drought won't kill them, and even if they get drought-stressed to the point of wilting, they will quickly recover after watering! But if you water too much and the potting soil can't dry out for a long time, root rot is inevitable!
