When it comes to betel leaf, one naturally thinks of betel nut, but betel leaf can not only be eaten on its own and used for seasoning, it also has health benefits and may even help prevent cancer. Scholars and farmers in Taitung have also been continuously experimenting with betel leaf dishes, incorporating betel leaf into cooking, such as betel leaf popsicles, betel leaf barbecue, and betel leaf dumplings, making it an emerging Taitung specialty cuisine. Chang Yu-chuan, associate professor in the Department of Public and Cultural Affairs at National Taitung University, who has long studied betel leaf, says that betel leaf has been stigmatized along with betel nut, but it is actually a crop beneficial to human health. Many products have already been developed abroad, and Taiwan should keep up.

Fun fact: Betel leaf is a plant in the pepper family (Piperaceae), with a pungent aroma and spicy flavor that can be used as a seasoning. Eaten on its own, it has a sweet taste and a distinctive fragrance. Taitung has the largest cultivation area. Betel leaf can be used not only to wrap betel nut, but also to wrap barbecue and dried fruit, bringing out its unique food flavor.
