Taiwan and Japan Companies Join Forces to Develop EV Batteries

(Taiwan Business News) Japan's Sony Energy Devices Corporation and Taiwan's Aleees signed a memorandum of cooperation on lithium batteries for electric vehicles. The Ministry of Economic Affairs said this is expected to fill the gap in Taiwan's key EV components and accelerate the development of the electric vehicle industry.
Officials from the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs said that electric vehicles are one of the government's priority industries for development; however, limited by insufficient battery stability, development has always been missing that final push. This time, Japan's Sony Energy Devices Corporation recognized Aleees' capabilities and signed a memorandum of cooperation, which is extremely helpful for Taiwan in building core technical capabilities in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
The officials pointed out that Aleees already has considerable strength in cathode materials for batteries, and in the future, under technology transfer from Japan's Sony Energy Devices Corporation, it will develop complete EV battery packs, filling the gap in key EV components.
In 2011, the Executive Yuan approved the Taiwan-Japan Industrial Cooperation Bridging Program to strengthen the complementary partnership between Taiwanese and Japanese industries, jointly explore global markets, and create mutual benefit and win-win outcomes. Over the past three years, 150 projects have been underway, with a total value of NT$22 billion.
