Sulphur-crested Cockatoo living habits
Sulphur-crested Cockatoos usually live in groups, often in flocks of hundreds. When foraging they disperse into small groups, usually feeding on the ground, while some keep watch in the trees, watching for danger. When danger is present they warn their foraging companions. In flight they often emit a hoarse, loud, enormous call. They sometimes go to farmland to forage, causing very serious agricultural losses, and are regarded as pest birds. In some areas farmers are permitted to hunt and kill Sulphur-crested Cockatoos that destroy crops, and some people also hunt them for their beautiful feathers.
Sulphur-crested Cockatoo breeding methods
1. In the wild they nest in tall tree hollows. In southern Australia the breeding season is from August to January, in the north from May to September, and in New Guinea they are active from the lowlands up to forests at an altitude of 1400 m. A clutch has about 2-3 eggs, usually 2, with an incubation period of 25 to 27 days, and the chicks stay in the nest for 9 to 12 weeks.
2. Captive-bred Sulphur-crested Cockatoos become noticeably quieter during the breeding period. The nest box provided should have sturdy metal edging; a metal nest box can be used, or it can be hung outside the cage, otherwise the powerful bite force will severely damage a wooden nest box, and it may even be completely destroyed within a short time or have its bottom broken, endangering the safety of the eggs and chicks.
3. During the breeding period, male Sulphur-crested Cockatoos often become very aggressive toward the female, frequently chasing her and even attacking her. Therefore the nest box can use a design with two entrances (T-shaped or vertical), so that when being chased and pecked the female is less likely to be cornered and seriously injured. The female lays about 2 to 3 eggs at a time, the incubation period is about 30 days, and the feathers are fully grown after 9 to 10 weeks. They are sometimes sensitive and uneasy about nest box inspections. Adult birds have breeding ability after 4 or 5 years of age.
