"Taitung Organic Day" at the Legislative Yuan: Legislator Liu Chao-hao Invites Yu Shyi-kun to Promote Organic Agriculture

Liu Chao-hao Promotes "Taitung Organic Day," Invites Yu Shyi-kun and Several Legislators to Market Taitung Specialty Products at the Legislative Yuan

Legislator Liu Chao-hao invited Yu Shyi-kun and legislators from across the political spectrum to hold a "Taitung Organic Day" press conference at the Legislative Yuan this morning to promote Taitung County's local organic agricultural products.

Turmeric, rice, coffee, plums - the legislators went from stall to stall sampling the fresh products. In order to promote Taitung's local organic agricultural products, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Liu Chao-hao held Taitung Organic Day at the Legislative Yuan to market them, taking action to promote and boost sales of Taitung's agricultural and specialty products.

Former Premier Yu Shyi-kun stated that Taiwan's grain self-sufficiency rate is about 30%. To revitalize rural areas, raise the grain self-sufficiency rate, safeguard national security and increase farmers' incomes, organic agriculture should be promoted jointly. The draft Organic Agriculture Promotion Act is awaiting review at the Legislative Yuan, and he has already visited Wang Jin-pyng and Chen Bao-ji, Minister of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan.

Yu Shyi-kun said that Yilan County has already taken the lead in passing the Yilan County Organic Agriculture Promotion Self-Governance Ordinance, and he hopes Wang Jin-pyng will push for the draft Organic Agriculture Promotion Act to be legislated as soon as possible and promoted nationwide.

Chen Chun-yan, Deputy Director-General of the Agriculture and Food Agency under the Council of Agriculture, stated that Taitung has fine mountains and waters, and development would proceed more smoothly if tourism were combined with organic agriculture. Currently, organic agriculture covers more than 6,000 hectares, with Taitung accounting for 10 percent. The public has confidence in organic fruits and vegetables, and counties and cities are actively promoting organic fruits and vegetables in schoolchildren's nutritional lunches, providing consumers with more and healthier organic agricultural products.

The Agriculture and Food Agency will also hold "Taitung Organic Day" in Taitung on February 9, hoping to promote more of Taitung's high-quality local fruits and vegetables, rice and agricultural specialty products to more people.
