The effects and uses of field bindweed

Field bindweed, also known as small bindweed, wild morning glory, lala wan, etc., is the whole plant and flowers of the perennial herbaceous vine field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) of the genus Convolvulus in the family Convolvulaceae. Used as medicine, it has the effects of dispelling wind, relieving itching, and relieving pain, and has a therapeutic effect on conditions such as rheumatic arthralgia, toothache, and neurodermatitis. Let us now take a look at the effects and uses of field bindweed!

The medicinal effects of field bindweed

[Nature and flavor] Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, toxic.

[Meridian tropism] Kidney meridian.

[Effects] Dispels wind, relieves itching, and relieves pain; mainly treats rheumatic arthralgia, toothache, and neurodermatitis.

The pharmacological effects of field bindweed

1. A 70% alcohol extract of the aerial parts of field bindweed (converted to an aqueous solution when injected intravenously) at 10 mg/kg can lower the blood pressure of anesthetized cats by 25-50%, lasting 1 hour. The blood pressure-lowering principle is muscular in nature, dilating isolated rabbit ear blood vessels and slowing the heart rate. For rabbits with hypertension induced by posterior pituitary extract, intravenous injection of the alcohol extract at 10 mg/kg/day for a total of 10-12 days can restore blood pressure to normal.

2. A 70% alcohol extract of the aerial parts of field bindweed, in anesthetized cats (coronary sinus method), at 10-50 mg/kg can increase coronary flow by 33%. The total alkaloids extracted from it also have a blood pressure-lowering effect, but have no effect on coronary flow, and the flavonoid fraction has no significant effect on the cardiovascular system. Field bindweed can counteract electric convulsions in rats, but cannot counteract convulsions caused by pentylenetetrazole and strychnine.

Medicinal prescriptions of field bindweed

1. To treat neurodermatitis: an appropriate amount of fresh lala wan whole plant, soaked in 70% alcohol for one day and night, applied by rubbing twice a day.

2. To treat toothache: three parts fresh lala wan flowers and one part pepper, ground together into powder. Mix well, insert into the cavity or place on the diseased tooth and bite tightly, do not swallow.

3. To treat rheumatoid arthritis: three qian of field bindweed root, decocted in water and taken orally.
