The formula meaning of Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang

1. This pattern is caused by a constitution of yang deficiency combined with contraction of wind-cold. The treatment method is mainly warming the meridians and releasing the exterior. In a constitution of yang deficiency there should be no fever; now there is instead fever, together with extremely severe aversion to cold that is not relieved even with thick clothing and heavy blankets. This is due to external contraction of wind-cold and the struggle between pathogenic qi and healthy qi. In an exterior pattern the pulse should be floating; now the pulse is instead deep and faint, and there is also mental fatigue with a desire to sleep, which shows that yang qi is already deficient. This is a pattern of yang qi with external contraction and cold in both the exterior and interior.

2. In the formula, Mahuang is pungent and warm, inducing sweating and releasing the exterior, and serves as the sovereign medicine. Fuzi is pungent and hot, warming the kidney and assisting yang, and serves as the minister medicine. The two medicines work together and complement each other, forming a commonly used combination for assisting yang and releasing the exterior. Xixin enters the lung and kidney meridians; its fragrance is strong and its nature is good at moving and penetrating, reaching through both the exterior and interior. It can both dispel wind and scatter cold to help Mahuang release the exterior, and also stir the true yang qi in the kidney to assist Fuzi in warming the interior, and serves as the assistant medicine.
