The Shatian pomelo, also known as Wendan, is a tree plant of the genus Citrus in the family Rutaceae. By flesh flavor it is divided into two major categories, sour pomelo and sweet pomelo; by flesh color it is divided into two major categories, white-fleshed pomelo and red-fleshed pomelo; and by fruit shape it is divided into two major categories, spherical or pear-shaped. Now let us take a look together at where the Shatian pomelo is produced!

Where is the Shatian pomelo produced?

The Shatian pomelo is a local specialty of Rong County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Because it was first planted in Shatian Village, Rong County, Guangxi, it is called the Shatian pomelo. As early as the 1930s it was exported to places such as Hong Kong, China, the Nanyang region, Europe and the Americas. It has now been expanded to areas such as the Xunjiang, Longjiang, Guijiang, Lijiang and Hongshui River basins in Guangxi, and Guangdong, Hunan, Sichuan, Zhejiang and Jiangxi have also successively introduced it. In 2013 Guangxi became China's largest concentrated producing area of Shatian pomelo, with the planting area of Shatian pomelo in the entire autonomous region reaching several hundred thousand mu.

The producing area environment of the Shatian pomelo

The Shatian pomelo has relatively large fertilizer and water requirements, so sufficient fertilizer and water is an important condition that must first be considered in developing Shatian pomelo, and a site with deep, loose, fertile soil and sufficient water sources must be selected for establishing an orchard. For mountainous land, gently sloping land with a slope below 20 degrees facing south with its back to the north should be selected, and there should be water-source forest at the hilltop. Wherever citrus can be planted, Shatian pomelo can also be planted.

Cultivated varieties of the Shatian pomelo

1. Soft-branch type: The tree shape is mostly spreading, the branches are relatively small, the branching angle is relatively large, some branches on the outer part of the canopy droop slightly, the leaves are relatively small and thin, the leaf color is relatively deep green and glossy, the fruit is relatively small, inverted heart-shaped, with a short neck, relatively thin peel, a relatively smooth surface, relatively soft juice sacs, crisp and tender with a clear sweet taste, and a honey-like flavor.

2. Hard-branch type: The tree shape is semi-spreading, the branches are rough and grow upward, the leaves are relatively large and thick, the leaf color is relatively light, the fruit is relatively large, pear-shaped, with a high neck, relatively thick peel, a rough surface, relatively hard juice sacs, crisp, with a relatively bland taste and a slight bitterness. The soft-branch type bears more fruit than the hard-branch type, has good quality, and gives high and stable yields.
