What conditions are needed for growing pistachio trees?

The pistachio tree is a small deciduous tree of the genus Pistacia in the Anacardiaceae family. It is drought-tolerant, light-loving, intolerant of shade, afraid of moisture and summer waterlogging, and has extremely strong drought resistance. Its taproot extends 7-8 m deep into the soil, and its horizontal roots are well developed, able to extend beyond 10 m. It is the most drought-resistant fruit tree in the world and an excellent tree species for soil and water conservation. Let's take a look at the conditions for growing pistachio trees below!
Soil conditions
The pistachio tree is highly adaptable to soil and can grow in almost all soil types. It especially prefers deep, thick, light, or dry calcareous sandy loam and yellow loam. It can also grow in clay loam, gravelly soil, shallow chestnut soil, light loam, and mildly salinized soil, with a pH of 7.7-8.0. It can even grow and bear fruit on gravelly barren mountain land and semi-desert land. Its growth requires trace elements such as potassium and iron. The fruit is not tolerant of salinity and alkalinity, and it cannot grow in excessively damp and waterlogged places.
Water conditions
In suitable growing areas for pistachio trees, the annual precipitation is generally in the range of 200-400 mm, where they grow well and bear abundantly. In areas with annual precipitation below 80 mm, they can still tenaciously grow, flower and bear fruit, but a lack of water during the summer sensitive period will result in a complete loss of the fruit harvest. Iran's best pistachio orchards are on plateaus at an altitude of 4,000 feet, considered the worst desert in the world, with average annual rainfall of 254-381 mm, and less than 127 mm in the southern and eastern regions. In summer, temperatures in the northern part of the plateau reach as high as 37.8°C. An annual sunshine duration of 2,500-3,000 hours is optimal. It does not have high requirements for air humidity, and the groundwater level is best kept below 3 m.
Temperature conditions
Pistachio is highly adaptable to temperature. In **Shufu County, it can withstand high temperatures of 42°C and low temperatures of -26°C. In Sicily, the summer temperature is 23°C, the average temperature is 7.8°C, and a low temperature of -3°C causes no damage to the tree. In the United States, it can tolerate a low temperature of -14.5°C, while in Iran it ranges from -9.5°C to 42°C. In some regions of the former Soviet Union, it can tolerate a temperature of -17°C. Iran is the most suitable growing place for pistachios, with an average January temperature variance of -15°C over 7 years and an average temperature of 7.2°C. Pistachio trees need a sufficiently cool winter to break bud dormancy and a long, hot, dry summer to ripen the fruit. During the fruiting period, a large day-night temperature difference is required. In areas with temperatures ranging from a maximum of 43.8°C to a minimum of -32.8°C, the fruit grows well.
