The prospects for grape cultivation

Fresh grapes are deeply favored by consumers for their bright colors, juicy and delicious flavor, and rich nutrition. In particular, in recent years experts and scholars at home and abroad have agreed that the resveratrol extracted from fresh grapes is a good substance for softening blood vessels and plays a good health-care role. This has made market demand for table grapes even greater, and therefore the prospects for cultivation are very good.

Grapes are a universally popular fruit, excellent in color, aroma, and taste, able not only to satisfy people's sensory enjoyment but also to have high nutritional and health-care value. According to measurements, grapes contain 65%-85% water, 15%-25% carbohydrates, mainly glucose and fructose, 0.5%-1.5% organic acids, mainly malic acid and tartaric acid, and 0.3%-0.5% minerals, and contain multiple vitamins as well as protein and amino acids; red grapes contain relatively more pigments and tannins. Each kilogram of fresh grapes can produce 2928.8-4184 joules of heat. Raisins dried naturally in the air or artificially oven-dried contain more than 60% sugar and can produce 13974.6 joules of heat per kilogram. Ordinary wine fermented from grape juice is a nutritional health-care beverage, containing large amounts of amino acids and vitamins, 24 trace elements, and other nutritional components. Li Shizhen once recorded in the Compendium of Materia Medica that wine has the functions of "warming the waist and kidneys, enduring cold, and preserving complexion." A latest research report published in January 1997 in the famous American magazine Science stated that an anti-cancer substance called "resveratrol" has been found in grapes and their products, and the abundant presence of this substance can prevent cancerous changes from occurring. Before this, a large number of research reports pointed out that moderate drinking of wine, especially red wine, can reduce fat deposition in blood vessels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In recent years, the price of fresh grapes has been stable with some increase. For conventional varieties, the income per mu is 10,000-15,000 yuan, while for high-grade table varieties the income per mu is as high as 20,000-30,000 yuan, and protected cultivation can even yield 30,000-60,000 yuan per mu.

The greatest advantage of grape cultivation is that if planted in the current year, it will flower and bear fruit and show returns the next year, with a large harvest in 3 years, while under normal cultivation and management the productive lifespan can reach 15-25 years. Up to now, grapes can be seen everywhere across the vast land of China, whether in the three northeastern provinces, the northwestern plateau, the Yangtze River basin, or the rainy Jiangnan region. The resistance and broad adaptability of grapes cannot be compared with any other kind of fruit tree.
